    Jonah Lomu body-building debut

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asi...ic/8265341.stm

Former All Black star Jonah Lomu had to settle for second place when he made his debut in the world of competitive body-building.

Lomu, 34, took up the sport to get fit ahead of his planned rugby comeback in France later this year.

Wearing shiny blue briefs, the feared winger twirled, clenched and did the splits before a cheering crowd at the Wellington Bodybuilding Championships.

He came second in the men's over 90 kg (198 pound) class and the mixed pairs.

Lomu told New Zealand's Sunday News that he wanted to be a good role model both for his son and for those who, like him, had received kidney transplants.

"I want to be a great example and I want to be a great dad," he said.

The athlete said his new hobby had helped him lose more than 30 kg in the last six months.

In November Lomu heads to France to play for Marseille Vitrolles.

One of th most impressive rugby players I have ever seen on th pitch. And I understand why he took bodybuilding to get fit again. What better way to lean up keeping most of your muscle mass?

But going on stage like that... It was not necessary.

He used to be much bigger than now but props specially after having had the below....

At the end of 1996 Lomu was diagnosed as having nephrotic syndrome, a rare and serious kidney disorder. His rugby union career went on hold whilst the disorder was treated. In May 2003, the NZRFU announced that Lomu had been put on dialysis three times a week due to deterioration in his kidney function. Side effects of Lomu's dialysis treatment led to severe nerve damage in his feet and legs; his doctors warned him that he faced life in a wheelchair if a kidney transplant was not performed soon.

Late in March 2004, Lomu was quoted by a Hong Kong newspaper to the effect that a suitable live kidney donor had been found, and that he would have transplant surgery sometime during 2004. However, the former All Blacks team physician who was overseeing Lomu's treatment quickly denied the report. Nonetheless, at the end of July 2004 it was reported that Lomu had indeed undergone a kidney transplant on Tuesday, 28 July, in Auckland, New Zealand. The kidney was in fact donated by Wellington radio presenter Grant Kereama. Lomu soon announced his intention to train for his rugby union renaissance in June 2005
