Does my brother need to see a psychotherapist?
Ok anyone who knows me good knows various things run in my family lol. Almost everyone in my family has a minor case of OCD, I got it the least, my one brother has it a little worse, but then the one this thread is about has it pretty bad.
The problem is even though I'm going to school at the prospect of doing therapy myself, I can't do a fvckn thing for him.
This is what he does and its always the SAME thing, and he's been doing it ever since he was little boy. The problem now is... he can just move bigger things cause hes older.
But it happens at least once a week sometimes twice, usually on his days off when I'm not home. And what he does lol, it sounds stupid but you have to put yourself in my shoes and understand how something like this can affect someones daily life. HE MOVES THINGS.
Furniture, blenders, beds, microwaves, tvs, lamps, book shelves, the shed in the backyard (did all by himself too which is crazy, thing ways an easy 300lbs) but its always usually a medium sized appliance object. Never dishes, cups, silverware or really anything smaller then an electric can opener.
But imagine this. We are creatures of habit. When you're in a rush in the morning YOU KNOW where the coffee machine is, you KNOW where the garbage is, you KNOW where everything you need is.
You get use to the angle the couch is by the tv. IT MAKES LIFE EASIER. Its what I call the familiarity factor.
Well today I can't make coffee cause I can't find the fvckn coffe machine. I go to throw an egg carton away and OMG where the fvck did the trash go?! Then I get home 9pm tonight, gone for 14 fvkn hours and I come home to see the couch moved, his bed turned 180 (its in his room I really don't give a fvck what he does to his room) but things are just moved EVERYWHERE.
The problem is he really really truely believes its normal. And if you ask him he always says "I just think it looks better that way". Then I say "WELL WHY THE FVCK WAS THAT YOUR EXCUSE LAST TIME BUT THEN YOU STILL MOVED THE SHIT ANYWAY!!?!?" And then it always leads to an arguement.
He is ok with not moving really big things usually, like washer, dryer, fridge type stuff. But the tv and couch, microwave, coffeemachine and all our smaller appliances he goes to town on.
I have considered a hundred million ways to stop this.
Naturally I assume therapy because I believe therapy is great. But I also realize how therapy only works for people who have realized they have a problem in the first place.
So I had to formulate a new plan.
And this is my genious (sp) plan.
I'm going to start moving things too. I don't see why this won't work. I saw on dr phil a mother who got her kids to stop crying and screaming when the mom would start crying and screaming the same way the kids would. And it worked.
So I think I'm gonna pick 5 random appliances 3 days a week, and just move them. And then when he asks I'll say "Bro, I did it cause I thought you would think it looked better.."
and I'll just do it for the next year or so till he stops.
I really have ran completely out of options at this point. But I'm slowly begining to lose my mind..

man that would annoy the hell out of me.
I think therapy could help but he would have to admit its a problem and want help.
Try your theory it may work. Or just drive everyone else in the house insane

Well if you look at it from the psychological perspective, I don't believe your actions are going to be able to cause an elimination of his behavior.
It's going to irritate his compulsions, because things will be out of place. One thing you should be very worried about is the possibility of altering his OCD... if you force him to adapt his behavior it could mean worse obsessions unfortunately.
... Look into Cognitive-behavioral therapy, it's genuinely one of the few forms of therapy that seems to have SOME impact on people suffering with OCD.

Yeh from the perspective of him actually having a "disorder". See the thing with psych is (this is just my opinion) that half the people diagnosed with disorders really just have behavoiral problems. (again this is a nontestable theory) So if it was behavoiral, then I could see it might work.
If it there was some deeper function in his brain at work, or some chemical imbalance, then yeh I see how I could aggravate it.
Which really only leaves one way to find out..

I have it very mild.
I have a few friends who have friends who have it and some bad. DRUGs. Unfortunately I think that is the main answer. Therapy wont make any difference if he does not see a problem and I think your solution even though it sound fun may cause more problems.
