Are supermarkets allowed to do this with their chicken?
Ok so I always get the cheapest chicken and will do a long slow boil to cook the fat out (it works great imo) and this is what happened a few days ago.
My brothers a butcher so I went in to get some discounted meat (he hooks me up which is the great thing about having a butcher in your family). Anyway I didn't realize he had just left work so I go searching on my own for chicken, and find this vegetable seasoned chicken for $.99/lb it smelled REALLY good.
So I buy around 10lbs bring it home and start to cook it. He looks at the chicken and goes "bro, wtf is wrong with you do you know what this is?"
I'm like "no, what are you talking about?"
He says I bought the shittiest crappiest chicken, that it expired about a week ago, and the supermarket drops the price, dumps a load of seasoning on it, then sells it dirty cheap so they don't lose money.
I'm like "dude its fine, even if it is expired it smells great and I'm cooking all the bacteria out of it".
So I finish cooking, eat some chicken.
Later on in the day have some more, tastes great I love it. A few hours pass..
Then HOLY SHYT!!!
The poops hit me like a hurricane. This bubbling sensation in my stomach is like jet fuel forcing this gas propelled shit out of my body at mach speeds. So naturally I go eat some more chicken completely forgetting the conversation we had.
Then today again all day I'm pooping like a mofo.
I asked my brother if thats legal for them to change expiration dates and he said "they're merchants they can do what they want?" But I'm fvckn pissed I thought this was a great deal and have shit out my entire intestinal track.
So now I gotta throw away this yummy but very crummy veggie chicken. Has anyone ever ate this shit before? Can I sue the supermarket and get a 10 gazillion dollar settlement or am I being greedy?

Yeah probably not legal bro, false advertising. Alot of those cheap meat outlets deal with some low quality meat, most are too old for the supermarket. I feel for ya bro the shits sux! lol

Exactly, people pay good money for colon cleanse and you just got it for $0.99 lb LOL
I dont know if I believe all that CRAP... I think your brother might have been messing with you and it was just a coincidence. Sorry but even stores like Winco I watch them through out perfectly good chicken that has been cooked that day just because it's been out but heated a certain number of hours. I doubt they sell expired chicken.

i think its illegal to sell it after the date. I get my meat at walmart and they discount it the day it expires and i've seen them pull it off the shelves when i shopped at like 11pm

I hate being ripped off for food, specially like that, i would go back to where i bought it from and tell him that he (supermarket owner) must sort you out or you will go to the newspapers with this.. then if he doesnt id break his shit.

Im not sure how it is in the US, but in the UK, Trading Standard Laws are ultra tough, especially with certain EU laws now. Supermarkets can be fined a thousand pounds per out of date product still on display, even if its just one day out, can fine the person who does the date checking upto a grand per product, and the Store Manager can be fined a grand per product.
Im pretty sure if you tried to make an issue with the store, they'll do everything in their power to deny selling you an out of date product. Prehaps contact the equivilant of Trading Standards that you have there. Chances are if they've done this before, they'll do it again, only this time the customer will be a trading standards person instead. Hahaha, does everyone in the US love to sue? Im pretty sure the best you could get out of this is either a refund or maybe a bunch of free food.
I know dates are placed on products to keep well within regulations, like if a product has "Use by 10th Oct", then chances are it's good for a coupla days afterwards depending on what it is, prehaps longer, but a week is really playing with fire, and bad poultry is no laughing matter.

in high school i worked at a supermarket and they did some shaddy shaddy stuff. one thing that comes to mind is our butcher was also the BBQ man and made is own BBQ sauce that would go with the BBQ. he would make 5gallons at a time. we would pour it in jugs after it had cooled down but we forgot that night, and the next. so 2 days later the owner asked why we didnt pour it and we said we forgot. there must have been 20 flies in that stuff and he said scoop them out and pour it up. we did and i told my family to never get anything from there that isnt in a factory package.

I can confirm this. Being in the meat industry for over 10 years. This happens all the time. Never ever buy seasoned meats of any kind. Never buy overly cheap meat. You get what you pay for because there is always a wrong reason something is cheap. Also if you see sales on (for example) Black Angus Striploin for half the price I can assure you your not getting black angus and are getting some sort of AA or even single A cut of crap. I would recommend going to a local small butcher shop and start making friends with some butchers if you want to eat decent
When it comes to Meat in general, Cheap is garbage. If you can't afford to buy a $10-15 steak then go eat kraft dinner. Everytime I have people over for dinner they go crazy for how good the steaks are or the roast, or whatever it was that me and my old lady made. Then they find out the price and they soon realize that quality costs money. I have had people tell me they haven't had a streak like the one they had over my place in there entire life. Now thats makes me sad.
But there is a larger picture here. This is sociaty in general. Its all about profits no matter what the costs are so to speak.Last edited by kojak_x; 10-05-2009 at 05:30 PM.
