Canadian looking for a handgun.
First off I know absolutly nothing about handguns, also the only reason I want one is for fun (target practice). Im in Canada and have to go through abit of a process to obtain one, which I shouldn't have any problems with.
What I want is something durable, easy, and something that will last me a lifetime. I don't want anything that will cost me an arm and a leg but am willing to invest more money in a quality pistol. There are so many choices I would really love if someone can point me in the right direction would be great.
So far I have been looking at Berrata

Go to the shooting range, try several out for a few weeks, research, take a gun class then decide. Everyone will have their own favorite and it might not be the same as yours.
education....
Mine is the Glock but there are several very good guns out there.

Yea you can rent them, try them out first, this will be your first and not your last.
G19 to me is a great starter pistol, good home gun
Glock = Ak for pistols
you have a couple similar choices like the
Springfield armory XD - nice trigger
Smith&Wesson M&P - thinner than glock plus changable backstrap
Sig
Beretta
if someone broke into my home in going for the glock, if target practicing im bringing my beretta
G17 is a full size 9mm imo got to have big hands for that
I was taught when you buy a target pistol the rule of thumb is
Grab the pistol, hold it to the floor, pick a target on the wall shoulder height, then bring it straight up to pointing it at target and see it the gun sights are lined up to your target naturally, WHERE YOU DONT HAVE TO TWEAT YOUR WRIST TO LINE UP.
If it lines up than thats the pistol for you, if not you will practice everyday trying to tweak it perfectly to aim right but when you need it the most in that moment when your life will depend on it and you will forget and be off your target 6" - 8" cause it doesnt line upLast edited by DOM6; 02-16-2010 at 12:35 AM.

I have an airsoft pellet gun, they are more fun because you can actually shoot people with them. I never understood real guns, too much crap to deal with if you get trigger happy.

It's simple. When you feel you or your family's life is in danger due to some phycho or crack head who had not regards for life you want to shoot him DEAD and get it over with and not take any chanced. I will NEVER shoot someone to wound them. If I pull my gun they will not be getting up again.

Beretta is a very nice gun, but the police stopped carrying the 9mm for a very good reason, not enough knockdown power. Here is something else to think about, the military uses 9mm and .45 so that will be the ammo hardest to get during a shortage. A .40 is a good choice for a carry weapon or home defense. That glock model 22 .40 is a great gun, I own one myself. The glock is easiest to strip down and clean, it comes apart in 2 seconds. Its accurate as hell, someone breaks in you pull the trigger and it goes bang, not a bunch of safety's on it, actually no safety. Beretta is a nicer looking gun though, but heavier.
Now here is what I seriously recommend, pick up a Walther P-22. Its a small 10 shot handgun that fires 22 long range shells, its so lightweight you can hardly feel it in your pocket, accurate, and 22's are cheap and fun to shoot!! And it'll still kill someone if you need to

I have a p-22. Me and my dad got into target shooting a while back and 9mm ammo was getting expensive. We got a p-22 and I love the thing. It has a barrel extension and is very accurate. If your gonna be doing a lot of shooting a 22 is nice just because the ammo is so much cheaper.

Thats funny, even though I shouldn't think it is. Things are very different here in Canada. 99% of Black people here are no different then white people. Most people here don't think of them as Black but just another person walking by. That goes for any race. Canadians are pretty easy going. Even at my gym, there are known outlaw bikers, a shit load southeast asians, cops, other known criminals, muslims, boxers, mma guys. Im sure there even is a homosexual somewhere in there. Everyone is easygoing and no one ever bothers anyone over race or anything like that. Its kind of fuc.ked up now that I think of it.
Also I don't need the kill anyone and I don't need it for self defence. I just want it for fun, because its something I always wanted to do.

Why would there be a shortage? Could it be cause the entire globe runs on oil and that could trigger food shortages if the shit ever hits the fan. Bullets of that type could be handy to use and barter with, or use on someone if hell ever broke loose like that. Its sounds far fetched but really isn't if you think about it.

bro im from canada also. just picked up my glock 17 last week. Gonna pick up a sig 40 cal or a 45 as well soon but the ammo is quiet a bid more expensive. i picked up 1000 9mm bullets today after tax 300 bucks which is pretty cheap. I also picked up sks rifle with 1100 bullets for 350 canadian as a non restricted weapon which u could take to the bushes for target practice which u can't do with the hand guns.

Springfield XD or the XDM both are nice and the XDM is adjustable if you have small or big hands. We have the 9mm and I love it. the best part is you can pull the trigger 18 times...then once more before you have to reload haha. If anyone was to ever break in or something and you have that in your hand dont worry about wasting ammo just point and start pulling lol

in canada u can't have handguns with clips that hold more than 10 bullets and the rifles and the semi automatic rifles, the magazines have to be modified to hold no more than 5 bullets. its freakin wack and you can't have auto machine guns or aks period

I am going to be buying a Glock. Not sure on the 17 or 19.

Have an Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm, great gun.
Keep a Taurus Ultra-lite .38 with hydroshock hollowpoints in the night stand, and a Mossberg Mariner 500 12ga.

The G23 is 40.cal and is the same size as the G19 9mm
Plus with the G23 you can swap just the barrel to a 9mm or 357. in the same gun so you can have 3 cal. in 1 gun
I have the G23 and G26
My G26 is ported so the recoil of the 9mm round is like a 380

I think I'll be looking into a Walther P22 or anything else that might be a 22. The reason being because I just want it for target shooting and they are fairly inexpensive handguns along with inexpensive ammunition. I figure it could be a good starter pistol.
Here in Canada I first have to pass Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (or challenge the exam), (the Book to study for the exam is like 220 pages). Then I have to apply for 'Possession/Acquisition License which could take up to 6 months for processing. I believe they check to see If I have a criminal record or have been convicted with a violent crime or have been a victim of violence.
I should have no problems.
I have a guy hopefully taking me to the shooting range this weekened.
I was curious of the process in the States to obtain a firearm?
Also I was wondering if anyone can point me out to anymore good 22 caliber handguns that might be good to look at.
One more thing, does anyone know that if your a member of a shooting club if they have lockers to store your hanguns there? It would make things easier for me if they do.
Thx for all the help.

Glock all the way. Haters can talk crap but Ive had many guns, some expensive, some not. My G30 is still the one I trust to carry daily. Never misfired, simple to use, and .45 is a guaranteed stop.
