New Study Shows Whey Protein Supplements Are Contaminated
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/m...view/index.htm
The promises are enticing. Whether you're looking to shed unwanted pounds, get a quick energy jolt, build muscles, or fight the aging process, protein drinks are being boosted by some supplement makers as a scientifically proven way to quickly achieve your goals.
The products, sold as ready-to-drink liquids or powders that you mix with milk, juice, or water to make shakes, attract not just athletes and body-builders but also baby boomers, pregnant women, and teenagers looking for a shortcut to a buff body.
Some ads say that protein supplements, in flavors such as strawberry and vanilla cream, can be a nutritious and time-saving snack or meal replacement.
Marketing for Energy First Pro Energy Whey Protein Isolate says the protein supplement is "ideal" for pregnant women and growing children, and also offers this promise for aging adults who use it: "You will rarely if ever be sick and you will begin to look and feel years younger."
In a testimonial for BSN Lean Dessert Protein Shake, "fitness celebrity" Jennifer Nicole Lee says, "Being a busy mom with 12-hour workdays, I rely upon my Lean Dessert Protein to get adequate amounts of protein without wasting time on creating complex meals ...."
Another product, Muscle Milk, boasts on its website: "Designed after one of nature's most balanced foods: human mother's milk ...."
But our investigation, including tests at an outside laboratory of 15 protein drinks, a review of government documents, and interviews with health and fitness experts and consumers, found most people already get enough protein, and there are far better and cheaper ways to add more if it's needed. Some protein drinks can even pose health risks, including exposure to potentially harmful heavy metals, if consumed frequently. All drinks in our tests had at least one sample containing one or more of the following contaminants: arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury. Those metals can have toxic effects on several organs in the body.

from the same Consumer Reports story.....
Shao, the industry trade-group official, says there is no such thing as consuming too much protein, as long as you're getting other nutrients in your diet as well.
Not so, says Kathleen Laquale, a licensed nutritionist and certified athletic trainer. "The body can only break down 5 to 9 grams of protein per hour, and any excess that is not burned for energy is converted to fat or excreted, so it's a ridiculous waste to be recommending so much more than you really need," she says.
What do you guys think of that? 5 to 9 grams of protein and hour with the rest turning to fat or excreted??? I have heard and read that many times before...but many guys (me included) have always downed crazy high amounts of protein in one meal? Seems like a waste? Thoughts?

I'm finding those supposed dosages very hard to swallow! No pun intended. I did an essay on pollution at the beginning of the year, in particular the harmful effects of Arsenic and Lead. This is what I uncovered:
Arsenical pesticides and leaded petroleum and leaded paint are outlawed today in the USA due to the serious health risks that Pb and As pose (Peryea, 1999). The greatest threat of arsenic comes through drinking water typically through consumption over a long period of time that contains low concentrations of inorganic arsenic (WHO). Such exposure can lead to effects such as melansosis and cancer of the bladder, kidney and lungs, blood vessel disease, diabetes and impairment of infant IQ development (WHO). About 1 in 100 people that drink water containing more than 0.05 mg/l of arsenic over long time periods will eventually die from an arsenic related cancer, the proportion becomes 10 in 100 people when arsenic levels rise to 0.5mg/l. The results of a study of 720 children aged between 8 and 12 in rural villages within Shanxi province showed that high concentrations of As in the water had affected the intelligence and growth (Wang, 2007) of children negatively. A report made by the Blacksmith Institution states that a study published in Applied Toxicology and Pharmacology (ref) claimed that 52% of well water in the Shanxi province was unsafe to drink, forcing the Chinese Government to admit that 1 in 5 of it’s citizens do not have access to safe drinking water.
If someone was consuming 12 grams A DAY of Arsenic they would be dead.
I'm not naysaying anything, but I really find it hard to believe that, that much metal traces has been found in these whey protein products.

We consume something like 0.1 mg/L of arsenic every day, its pretty unavoidable due to industrial processes and the fact that arsenic can exist naturally in the environment. Our bodies will only absorb about 5% of that amount, the rest is excreted.
Sorry, I dont buy 12 grams of arsenic is in 3 scoops of powder. No way.

That's what I was thinking if it was all that bad people would be collapsiing left right and center but is it true that these heavy metals are in the proteins? If so how do they get away with selling these products?

http://www.origen.net/arsenic.html
20 grams of CCA wood ash containing arsenic is enough to kill a human. 12 grams would make someone tremendously ill.
I think there's a typo error, do they not mean 12 mg, not grams?
