contact your state public health dept. to find out if they have well water test kits. It comes in a small box with a plastic bottle in it. Run the water for a little bit first before filling the bottle. Its best to get the sample from an outdoor frost free hydrant, but whatever is available. they will test for all kinds of stuff like coliform bacteria,e-coli, pesticides, herbicides, DDT and all that. Should cost around 10-29 bucks for the test. And if you are still concerned you can always get you a Reverse Osmosis system for your kitchen.

As long as the well is kept clean, well water is great. No sodium or any other extra additives in it. Pure water. Drink away...

I grew up on well water too. I work in the Environmental field and I can tell you that alot of the stuff you hear about drinking only filtered or bottled water is non-sense. Most private wells are completely safe and fine. That being said.....it is a good idea to get it tested for piece of mind. Ask your new LL for test results she may have already had it tested....maybe you could even to get her to pay for a test if she is hard up for a renter....never hurts to ask. If not the water quality tests are pretty cheap. Some wells do get contaiminated from pest/hericides runoff, leaking underground storage tanks and if your in a area that has ever flooded...a well could also get contaminated from septic tanks etc.
