Donnie Darko
WARNING: IF YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN THE MOVIE "DONNIE DARKO" AND DON'T WANT THE PLOT RUINED, DO NOT READ THIS THREAD.
I recently saw the movie "Donnie Darko". I decided to start this thread because I know that alot of bros on this board, like Nathan fir instance, really like this movie. Personally, I don't really understand the full concept of what happens in the end. Please elaborate on the whole point of the movie for me someone...

That movie cracks me up man...especially when Donnie goes off on Patrick Swayze at that assembly...and that lady who works at the school who believes that there is no way Swayze's character could be into child porn..."Sometimes I question your committment to Sparkle Motion!"

Well, I freely offer my take of course. I read one critics opinion who suggests the end somehow confirms to Donnie the existence of God. Frankly i thought that was complete bullshit and if that is what the end signifies then I'd have to say the movie would turn into crap immediately in my mind. I despise religious propaganda of that nature.
Anyway, I think that what happens is that Donnie travels back through time. It isn't like we normally think of time travel though. Normally, people envision it to be like in Back to the Future where you could run into yourself in the past or some shit like that. i think in Donnie, it's only one's consciousness that travels back through time. Donnie realizes that in order to save his girlfriend, his mom and sister and everyone on the plane that'll crash, he needs to die. He is afraid to die alone throughout the movie but towards the end i think his fears are lifted. He understands the uselessness of it all and that everyone dies and that in a way it is their memories that they are alone with at the end. As the story goes in reverse right before he dies, he reads the letter he wrote to Roberta Sparrow in a monologue. i forget what he says exactly but it helps to understand what happens at the end. He says basically i think that when he dies, he hopes he can look back on everything in his life and smile. And not only does he smile when he reaches the end, but he laughs out loud. I think that's the message: There are things you can't control, when it's all said and done, you had might as well laugh about the things you DID control because what does it really matter anyway? What good is an ego when the world ends for you? Great movie that is really open to interpretation.

Great interpretation Nathan. I agree. Somehow I belive that he realizes he has to go back in time and save his family and girlfriend. The ironic part is that she (his g/f) doesn't even know who he is at the very end when she rides up on her bike and asks the kid what happened. Great movie.

Nathan, this is probably the best interpertation ive hear in my life bro...damn you analysed that shit well.
I have a thing to add, i remember this part when Donnie and his girl were talking about time travel, and she said something like...if time travel was possible, will people be able to go into the past and change all the bad things...or fix them...thats what basically Donnie did to save all the people. Maybe i'm missing someting, crrect me if i'm wrong
Yeah, and because Donnie is dead they will never find out the truth bout the child porn ring that Jeff Cunnigham is involved.
