Anyone ever owned an H1 or knows someone who has?
Are they as expensive to keep up as you would think? Some of the older ones are really affordable

Originally designed strictly for military use, this absolutely massive four-wheel-drive utility vehicle earned its 15 minutes of fame as a civilian conveyance when it became the ride of choice among Hollywood celebrities and professional athletes.

I work on the HMMWV's all the time. They are way over rated. As far as military use, they can't handle any of the shit we put them through, and everything breaks regularly, though the positive is that its all GM parts, so they are easy to interchange, and the thing is designed to be super easy to work on. As far as civilian use, I have seen these guys with them try to chain up and pull diesel pick ups and get drug around like they weren't there. I also see people try to take them offroading because they think its the ultimate offroad machine, and once again, it doesn't keep up with trucks or jeeps, they get stuck all the time.

They are super wide, and even with the width, the seats are pushed all the over against the doors. As a matter of fact, when sitting in the drivers seat, the steering wheel is off the the right a bit. Its because the body has a huge hump running up the middle, and the entire drivetrain is tucked up in the hump, along with independant suspension rather than solid axles, all done for more ground clearance. Some cool facts though:
It has four wheel disc brakes, which are actually located up next to the differential, rather than out by the wheel, so that the brakes, brake lines, etc all not exposed.
Also, it has a CTIS (Central Tire Inflation System) which allows you to inflate or deflate the tires with the touch of a button from the inside of the cab.
The tires are stretched as far the to the front and rear as possible so it has a better approach and depart angle for steep hill climbing.
The radiator is also located above the engine, mounted on the hood, rather than behind the grill, to decrease the chances of damage in a front end collision.
Lots of cool little ideas put into the hummers but alot of them rarely work the way they were intended to.

This is the type of guy I was talking about in my earlier post. No matter what the actual facts are about the HMMWV, or what people try to warn others of about the HMMWV, there are always people that ignore the experienced advice, and think that the HMMWV can do ANYTHING
Did you know the HMMWV, once up to 88mph, will travel through time?
Did you know the HMMWV can not only drive straight up a wall, but with a steady pace, it will continue on and drive along the ceiling as well?
Did you know that the HMMWV never has to be parallel parked? Instead, you push the big red button by the steering wheel, and all of the wheels turn 90 degrees and it drives sideways into the parking spot.
HMMWV's, they can do anything!
