    Okay, maybe I'm dumb; is that something you can see every night if it's dark enough? I don't think I've seen that even once in my life.

    yeah if you're away from a city and bright lights you should be able to see it...basically you are looking at (through) our galaxy from Earth with an edge-on perspective
