So I just quit my job. I'm sitting there in HR, doing the exit interview, and Gary asks me if I have anyother questions. So I look him right in the eye, straight faced, and ask.... "So I'm fully vested with my pension, right?" (I've only been there 5 weeks).
He's just looking at me, not knowing what to say, and I decide to cut him some slack and crack a little smile. He finally gets it and says "well , it's good to see you have a sense of humor!"
What a day. Now I need to focus on the passport.

Anything I give...is basically only my opinion Times Roman. But...from a lady whose dad was away often throughout my entire life; I did wish my father was around to be apart of things he missed out on. In no ways do I make him fell bad about any (I'm sure he grapples in his own way missing out on things); but he did what he had to do for his family. I didn't realize it than...but do now.
I do wish my parents had tried to communicate that to me than as I might have been more understanding. But...that generation didn't do that.
And, back before internet things were much different.
Your effort to provide for your family and stay a father figure while abroad is commendable!

it was a difficult decision. Ultimately, it means either working forever with no chance of retirement, or, I can retire in 7 or 8 years. My daughter is very much understanding the thought process, and she supports it. AND, she is very excited about all the exotic vacation spots we will get to go to. She wants Tahiti, I want to go to the motherland (Ireland), and my woman just wants to get the eh ee double L out of the US. BTW... Just back from Costco, and does anyone realize how much protein we consume in 6 months? I just purchased 42 lbs of protein powder, and I'm still thinking that might be a little light for half a year.

Dude its not worth is you said you wanted to put away 150k a year for 5 yrs and then retire. You would only have 750k Thats not even close to enough if you are accustomed to making 6 figures now. I would say that would last 8-10 yrs if you are careful and you would still be young when the money runs out but too old to really have someone want to hire you when you havent worked for 10 years.

I said I would retire. Woman will still work. She works for the state, and needs 15 more years for her pension. Or, we could pitch it all, and go live in some place like Nicarauga, where $750k would definately last. Or after this project, I could find another project like in Russia or South America where I could bring the family. Plus I have almost two hundred G in 401(k). And I'm eligable for SSN (minimum) in 13 years.

OK... I'm here in DC. Once clock says it's only 5:48, another says 3 hours later (DC). We had a medical emergency en route.... an older bloke took too many of his meds on an empty stomach and then hopped on the plane... started complaining of pains and feeling really ill (no sh1t), so we had to turn around and go back to Vegas to drop the dumb asss off. which increased our time by two hours. And fuk! dc IS friggin cold!!! I've been walking around looking for a place to eat and a liquor store, and guess what? dry on sundays, except the bars. I walked by this one bar, and looked in... alll twenty somethings, and I almost wlked in...... decided against... see, the wiser (older) you get, the more you realize not to put yourself in situations like that. Pvssy will be real scarce in the middle east, so better to avoid temptation in the first place.
this is my new Kabul blog....
