PC Certifications worth taking in 2011 ?
Anyone have Secret or Top Secret security clearance as well ? There are quite a few jobs which require a secret security clearance, but how do they expect you to get it if your not previously employed by anyone that requires it?

PC certifications realyl depends on what part of IT you want to get into.
Desktop? Server? Storage? Comms? etc..etc..etc..
In regards to Security Clearance, I hold a current Security clearance which I obtained while on job. Most jobs that accept your qualifications are willing to pay the money to have you apply for a security clearance.

I have secret clearance for my job as a contractor. Find a job that requires it, and they usually will help you get the clearance...it's only a week process.

I don't know about US, but generally not advisary to post what security clearance you currently hold...they don't favour that too highly when attempting to process security clearances...espically of a Secret or above catergory.

Depends on your skillset. CISSP, GSEC are the blockbuster certs that will get you sponsored for high level clearance work, that or very very rare certs.

If you just fix PCs, A+ type work, I would not bother. You need to be a monster engineer/programmer/security pro these days to break into the good gov contracts.

I think certification will get you the interview but real world experience and a related degree will be more powerful initially when you get in the real world. Certification during your work career is good to maintain current knowledge and also get you the pay raises. This is my opinion of course. I just don't see too much value in getting a ton of certification with no related experience.

I have a few certs, (A+, Network+, Server+, Security+) and in all honesty I feel as if they BARELY scratch the surface of what is current. But... I would have to say that for someone who is entering the IT industry, they should grab all the certs that they can. It gives you a foundation of knowledge regarding where computers have come from, and to understand the evolving technology, you need that.
Besides, I think AllAboutDan is right, and it depends on where/what you want to get into.
