getting ripped without cardio???
so i came across this article wanted to share with you guys and see your thoughts im going to copy andpaste so i dont break any rules
Getting ripped without cardio is a great title for my article because that was my goal this summer. Actually it was more than just a goal, it was also my challenge. I am the Spike Diet guy. I have lost over 100lbs with a combination of low calorie days and one amazing “spike day” a week to indulge with a surplus of calories to spike metabolism. The Spike Diet is my dream lifestyle, one where I can have fun and eat the way I want, and still be in great shape.
This summer, I decided I wasn’t satisfied with my physique and I wanted to have a single digit body fat percentage and a real six-pack. So the first thing I did was talk to my bodybuilding friends. Since I wanted to look like a bodybuilder, I thought they would be the ones to talk to.
I was given the same answer by all of them, do lots and lots of cardio! This was just not an acceptable answer for me. I hate cardio...no, I loathe doing cardio. I also knew that if I had to do cardio to get my six-pack, I wouldn’t maintain it, and as soon as I quit doing cardio, I’d lose it. This summer I had a theory of how I could increase fat burning without adding cardio or starving myself.
I feel like metabolism is the key to fat burning. The Spike Diet keeps my metabolism strong while I am losing weight. Another important factor for fat burning is carbohydrates. I love carbs but I also hate them, because while they are beneficial for muscle building, they are also a hindrance for fat burning.
During times when we are not active our body burns both carbohydrates and body fat for basic energy needs. When we exercise our body mainly burns carbohydrates and glycogen for energy. So my idea was if I limited my carbohydrates during the daytime hours, my body would be forced to burn more body fat for energy while my metabolism was at its peak, kind of like doing cardio in the morning on an empty stomach. Then with extra carbohydrates at night I would be able to re-store my glycogen for my exercise the following day, and provide my body with glucose while I fasted for several hours sleeping.
I have been known to go against “mainstream thinking”, but then again the mainstream is nearly 70% overweight in America, so maybe it’s a good thing to try something different. Instead of stopping my carbohydrate consumption at night I did the opposite and had 90% of my daily carbs after 5pm.
During the day hours, which I called my “Fat Burning Window” I snacked on protein snacks like; beef jerky, string cheese, low-carb shakes, and chicken. Then at night I had the majority of my calories and carbohydrates for dinner and a late night snack. I loved it! I was able to enjoy a “normal” dinner with my family while dieting, and it was fantastic.
The results were even better, when I combined this diet plan with my “Failure and Burn” workouts I lost 20lbs over 12 weeks. I hit my goal when I got down to 201lbs and my body fat was down to 9%. I maintained my strength, because my glycogen provided great energy for my workouts and I ate plenty of protein to stay anabolic and promote recovery.

I think they key to anything in life is versality. People kept giving me diet advice on here that was sound, some recommending low carb diets. But oddly enough I got most ripped when I taking in lots of carbs, and actually lots of simple carbs like dextrose.
In fact I was taking more than I've ever taken in my life, almost 100gms a day of dextrose alone. I'm not sure if it was the extra energy (which honestly could have been placebo for all I know) but for some reason my body started melting fat off like crazy. I was also doing cardio 2 times a day though. But still, for w/e reason in the world my body has always responded well to a clean diet, with an overabundance of simple carbs.
I really think although we all share a lot of similarities, you really do have to try some off the wall shit at times just to see how your body responds. Thats why in all honesty even when I read diet plans on here that sounds dumb, I try my best not to criticize. Although some shit is really just utter stupidity.
About this guys plan, I do see a nice wealth of stupidity in it. Having 90% of his carbs after 5pm is extremely dumb imo. There is no reason to be taking in those carbs at that time of day, he could have prob lost even more weight by taking out carbs all together. And his statistic about 70% of people being overweight is not because mainstream is eating all their carbs before 5pm. He seems to be assuming what their regimine is. These overweight people stuff their fat faces all day, before 5pm, after 5pm, and almost anything he does, AS LONG AS ITS NOT GETTING FAT, is not mainstream. So wtf.Last edited by Bojangles69; 01-28-2011 at 08:15 PM.

I would say its defiantly doable but your diet has to be perfectly dialed. I read an interview with branch warren in MD he said he used to do 90 mins of cardio a day leading up to a contest. His trainer now had him stop all of that he does no more than 30 mins a day and just lets the diet do its thing (He looked his all time best in this last olympia imo). I think it can be accomplished for a regular person to get skinny like 14-15% bf but to get way down in the single digits you need that little extra cardio.
On a another note for me it speeds the fat burning process so I don't have to be on a damn calorie restriction any longer than need be hahaha

Your body will break down the protein from your meals and use it for energy if you wait that long between carbs wouldn't it???

Yes absolutely. I don't think its a good idea and people need to stop hating cardio imo. Find better music on your ipod, get better headphones, but 90% of your carbs after 5pm is ridiculous.
Also, no matter how calibrated your diet is, cardio is the quickest way of burning fat. If you can get lean w/out cardio, you can get lean as fvck with it. Maybe I'm crazy or maybe its from my highschool wrestling days but I absolutely love sweating - running, sprinting, stairs, anything that gets my heart pumping. During the summer I'm running outside in the 100 degree heat with a hoody on for christsake. What is the big deal about cardio?
And another thing I should mention if I just do weights and leave the gym no matter how hard I did weights that day I still don't get that confident untouchable high walking out of the gym. Thats really the reason I like cardio so much is its really what adds the icing to my mood before I go out to work/school or w/e. On the days I just do weights I just don't get that calm but perky feeling that cardio delivers. Ill feel tight and cocky and what not but its just not the same. Cardio all the way baby!!Last edited by Bojangles69; 01-28-2011 at 08:33 PM.

I liked cardio when i was smaller. Now that i am 245lbs i dread it... and i smoke from time to time so that doesn't help.

Yeh good point I mean honestly when I use to smoke for some reason I never felt like it even effected my cardio but I was also much younger than (and I know you said only time to time).
I suppose if you're around that weight or a big dude in general it must be easier to dread. I'm a short, smaller guy (5'4", 180lbs, +/-13%bf) so yeh
I could definitely understand hating it if I was much bigger, bit of ignorance on my part in that respect.

When Ryan Reynolds was training for Blade 3 he claimed to do no cardio because the personal trainers found him to be too skinny. So they put him on a very strict diet to get him bulked up, then limited his calories while he continued to lift to cut him up. Not really sure if I believe it or not because celebrities are secretive about thier exercise plans. You can't even find Hugh Jackman's work out routine he did for Wolverine. Only vague info at best.

Everybody is different, some guys have to do cardio to get really lean and cut, I do not. I bulk 12 months out of the year and never get higher than 10%bf
Your diet has to be spot-on too

Any pics of this no-cardio 9% bodyfat guy? I only ask because I could post that too:
Hey, Johhny here...you may know me from the granola diet. That is right, I eat nothing but granola and I have lost a ton of weight. Recently I decided to get down to 5% bodyfat without doing any physical exercise. The first thing I did was talk to my bodybuilding friends and they all say the same thing "dude, you need to do a lot of exercise to get buff and ripped." Eff that, everyone knows exercise totally blows. So, I decided to try something new. I continue to eat nothing but granola, but I eat it all just before bed every night. Sure enough...I have been doing it for two weeks and have shed 25 pounds. Body fat is down to 7%, so I am almost there! Two more days and I think I will be at 4%, even better than my original goal!
Having said that, I think cardio sucks as well. Hate it.
