Naaahh.Alway thought he was overated. Some good rifffs ie: Stranglehold ...but not top ten or even close. He was in the era of Cat Stevens and The Eagles and Frampton so he was like a harder rock that wasnt Sabbath kind of niche Guitar icon imo. Funny tho in that sentence I broughbt up Frampton who was , in fact amazing. He still is good but was in a serious car accident and nearly lost his life. Frampton comes alive has some songs with some pretty mean licks. Also the Eagles had some bad ass "dual leads" in some of their songs. (Joe Walsh). Around that time or a little after you have the group Boston again with some bad ass dual leads and guitar work. What a shame they really only relased 2 albums (3 if you count the one years later). How about Skynyrd ? The solo from freebird is classic and isnt all that damn easy! Ten Greatest ever is pretty elite class though..that needs to be kept in mind.

I think Townsend is a great enetertainer ...talented as hell ...but his guitar chops dont warrant greatest status imo. He a rhythm guy. I remeber seeing a documentary on Hendrix and they were interviewing Clapton and he said Pete Towshned called him and said hey what are we going to do about this Hendrix guy - hes going to blow us all away. Clapton said where can I meet him to jam with him. I had to laugh ...like Townshend belongs in the same class as Clapton , Hendrix , Paige and Beck. What a joke. He also used to make fun of Kieth Richards ability quite a bit as well . Funny thing is I never remebr Kieth Richards ever saying or caring if he was considered a great guitarist. In factlike the quote I pointed out earlier he was pretty self depricating about his abilities. Honestly I think hes (Townshend) an overated, cocky douchebag with an overinflated ego. Perhaps my personal opinion does however could my judgment.
Ronnie Wood is solid. Great Rock and Roll Guy - period. He has the look - the swagger - the pedigree -he's a almost a textbook rock guitarist. As far as Rolling Stones guitarists Brian Jones was the most musically talented guy for sure. He played so many instruments - french horn in cant alwyas get what you want and sitar in paint it black. Ive read people sating he could play any instrument and play it well. Amazing talent. Prob the Stones guitarist with the best technical chops though was Mick Taylor - over Wood and Richards.
Eh just my opinions. I have played guitar since i was a freshman in college - I could talk about this forever. The best part is that there is no "correct" list - its all about music and personal feelings and opinion;. Great topic IMO..

i do agree on Townsend's personality, he can big an egotistical prick and that shady child porn took away alot of his veneer.
yeah, Richards couldnt give 2 shiney shits lol, its amazing he is even still alive!! hard for me to admit, but the stones are actually quite sloppy live
i do agree, its hard to have a list but we all seem agreed on Hendrix having been on a diff planet (quite literally ) and Clapton and Paige have to be making up the top 3.
Clapton playing live was the first artist to ever make me feel like i was listening to a recording, he was so crystal clear and perfectly timed, unbelievable stuff!Last edited by dec11; 11-25-2011 at 08:52 PM.

David Gilmour definitely needs to be talked about when adding up the best of the best! I think he was voted #1 by Fender a few years back, over Hendrix, Clapton, and many other greats!
If you haven't seen Stanley Jordon play, you are in for a real treat. As a player myself, I enjoy playing some odds and ends from greats like Page, Gilmour, Brian May, etc., but Stanley Jordon is just way out there with his talent and abilities. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=3ruEkWMtdM8

Not to rule out Alex Lifeson either. A master of timing and not missing notes or chords when on stage.

Yeah Gilmour has a distinct sound..classic strat with a delay ...and some of his stuff truly sounds amazing ...but I dont see how technically hes in the class of these guys. Fender prob picked him because he only ever played a Strat where as Hendrix played a Gibson Flying V early on and Clapton early on played a Gibson SG and a Gibson ES335 as well. Dont think that shit wouldnt sway Fenders pick of # 1 !!! Eh who knows maybe im wrong ...anyone know of Gilmour ever playing anything other than a strat ???

I'm a huge Zeppelin fan and Paige has probably influenced my playing the most, but you have to break it down into categories ex. speed, technical, innovation, emotion (some people speak through guitar). I'm certain that this was a "best of" of well known guitar players. If you went to Berkley you would probably find 20 guys as good as the ones listed here that will only ever play as studio recording artist. These guys are off the charts good but you would never hear of them.
Though I am a fan of heavy fast solos. Fast is the easiest way to play - once you get your mechanics down...it's fairly easy. So to me speed should never be a deciding factor. However speed goes to Petrucci - (Side note: I hate Dream Theatre, but damn they're good - Mike Portnoy on the drums...crazy)
If we're talking emotional/passionate guitar playing...I have to agree with somebody that wrote earlier and Warren Haynes is pretty freakin good. Now I'm more of a Zeppelin/Alice in Chains kind of guy and Dave Matthews Band would probably be one of the last bands I would normally recommend people to listen to (though everyone in DMB are amazingly talented), but I would urge some of you to youtube "Dave Mathews band live in new york cortez the killer" and listen to Haynes play his multiple solo's....if you're moved by guitar, you'll find it pretty amazing. I can't listen to this without getting goosebumps. If nothing else just start the video at 6.05. Now I'm a pretty big Neil Young fan and though I know its sacrilegious, my opinion is this was better than the original.
Innovation goes to Hendrix - Hands down
If we're talking about the BEST guitar player of all time...It's 100% Phil Keaggy. He's actually WORLD renowned by musicians as the best guitar in the world.I can't imagine anyone being "technically" better. He just amazes me no matter what style he's playing. If you want a listen youtube "Phil Keaggy The Reunion" He looks like a tool, but start listening at 2.30 and watch til the end. It probably won't be your style, but if you're a guitar player you'll be impressed.
