Mac'ed out
I am giving iMac a try. I have just picked up:
"Core i7" 3.4 27-Inch Aluminum (Mid-2011) is powered by a Quad Core 3.4 GHz Intel "Core i7" I7-2600 (Sandy Bridge) processor with a dedicated 256k level 2 cache for each core and an 8 MB shared level 3 cache.
I have never been a Mac guy but I have a few extra bucks burning a hole in my pocket and I figured what the hell. I am still learning but want to get others opinions. The one thing I really love is the fact there is no clutter on my desk. I literally have a pile of cables in the corner of the room from when i removed my PC. Just wondering who else has the iMac and what their opinions of it is. I have 14 days to try it out.Realist: A person who sees things as they truly are. A practical person. I own a design firm, so I have purchased a lot of Macs in the past 18 years. I have never been disappointed. I never have down time - software installs without breaking everything, hardware is easily recognized and crappy drivers have never been a problem like they are with a lot of sketchy PC hardware companies.
There are never obscure, unintelligible messages that you need to make a decision on during installs.
I appreciate their hardware design. The wireless peripherals work well, but the magic mouse goes though batteries quickly when the machine is used for work. Anyone that says they overcharge for being "pretty" probably doesn't understand why anyone would buy a nice car when a Corolla will get you around town just fine.
By a second drive and activate Time Machine to have hourly, daily and weekly backups. Invaluable.Last edited by JohnnyVegas; 08-27-2012 at 12:49 PM. Reason: Typo

I have almost the exact same iMac as yours, except that mine has the Core i5. I bought it used from Apple a little over a year ago and have loved every minute of using it. It doesn't seem to matter how many windows/programs I have open, it always runs smoothly. My only issue was some internet connectivity issues when I had Lion, so I upgraded to Mountain Lion and haven't had any issues. Other than that, no complaints. This is my first iMac after using Windows all my life and I'll never go back to a Windows based PC.

I am use to building my PCs and the only thing that really turnes me off is not having the ability to upgrade certain parts. I didn't get the SSD because it was WAY overpriced and when you tubing the DIY video the swap is very complicated. You have to take apart the entire machine just to upgrade the drive. I do have to say that I came from a PC with a SSD and there really isnt a huge speed difference with the HDD @ 7200RPM. So far so good.

Graphic design. Typical stuff: logos, identity packages, printed collateral, point of purchase promotional signage, print ads, websites. The Mac has dominated this industry pretty much from the point we transitioned to computers for layout (which was a little before my time).

Would you trust buying one of these used? I found a few that are apparently still under the apple coverage. I always try to buy electronics new but I found some 2011's for almost $1000 cheaper. Any thoughts?

I have had 3 mac books of some flavor in my house for over 5 years and have NEVER had an issue, user friendly too. My computer repairman buddy hates them and says vile things about them but the funny thing is that I haven't needed him to do any repairs or trouble shooting for me in over 5 years now.......now I know why he talks shat about them.

Go to apple.com. Select the iMac all the way to the right it says i5 but after you click buy then select iMac you are allowed to customize and switch whatever you want. For example you can change the i5 to the i7.

I know Macs are bulletproof and slick as could be.
But the funny thing is how well any decent PC with 7 will run if you trash all the crap that comes with any windows PC I have ever seen and simply install windows and nothing else. IE no other manufacturer junk. I am currently working on a Dell Inspiron that is over seven years old. Its a 1.73 ghz pent M with 2 gigs of ram. 3 years ago I did a clean install of Win 7 pro after using wipe drive to completely delete the entire hard drive. The antivirus is MS security basics which is free from MS.
Both the AV and Widows are set to install updates without asking anything of the user and guess what in 3 years of surfing the net, redtube, youporn etc. I have never had a virus, no lockups, no blue screens, hell it does not even choke.
The programs I currently have open are, Outlook which is accesing a gmail account, word and 7 different webpages as I am typing I have a video feed of a movie playing for background noise...all this on a 7-8 year old PC, so my question is what is wrong with a windows machine?
Now granted if you have Vista which may as well be called Windows millenium II or any of the older OS or the manufacturer installed malware then a windows PC is so much junk...but is that really the fault of MS or the operator for buying a car with a trunk full of junk and not emptying the trash?Last edited by Far from massive; 08-27-2012 at 07:29 PM.
