Whats also interesting, is I read some studies that show that tar shampoos ALSO act as DHT antagonists in scalp tissue as well.

Oh, I also used T-Gel shampoo as my tar shampoo for a while, its really good too: http://www.amazon.com/Neutrogena-T-G...s=tgel+shampoo

I can't find the studies I saw, but the idea behind coal tar shampoos assisting the prevetion of hair loss comes from the fact that, 5-alpha reductase (the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone into DHT) requires a co-enzyme known as NADP (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate) to complete this conversion. Anyways, a few studies revealed lower DHT levels in scalp tissues in patients that regularly used the coal tar solution in shampoos when they showered. The conversion of testosterone to DHT is catalyzed by 5a-reductase which serves to donate the extra hydrogen atom carried by DHT. To release this atom, 5a-reductase requires the presence of the co-enzyme NADP. It seems as though coal tar shampoos seem to inhibit the activity of this co-enzyme in scalp tissue when applied.

If you're worried about hair loss, pick Nizoral over coal tar shampoos. I use both. I mix them in the shower and rub it in to my hair. You dont need to use very much either, I make my bottles last like half a year each...

Also see here for more info on coal tar and hair loss prevention: http://www.hairloss-research.org/Upd...L-TAR4-10.html
