Does anyone's gym sponsor an in-house competition for newbs?
We've had a few here at the board. But i was wondering why gyms do not sponsor local competitions for their members? I think it would be fantastic for business, and would give props to the winners.
the contest wouldn't have to be body building per se....
more like "most improved" or something to that effect.
or most weight loss, or whatever. something to get the members involved.
I see so many newbs struggling in the gym. struggling with form. struggling with routines. struggling with basic knowledge.
I think the more you get your members involved, the more likely you will be able to retain them. and the more likely they will bring their friends with them.
or is this a stupid idea for some reason?

having used my "backyard gym" my entire life, the public gym thing is new to me. I go to 24hour and it really seems like with the volume of newbs that come and go, they are really missing out by not better retaining their members.....

I've been a member of gyms that have done similar. I wouldn't enter one of those comps personally, always some 50% bodyfat person that has never exercised that would win it then buy mcdonald's with the earnings and get fat again.

Never heard of it TR,
But it seems like a really good idea. I agree with you that it would give members a reason to stick around and build a community feeling amoung the gym members.
However, I think one problem may be that the vast majority of gyms are able to exist because upwards of 90% of members join for year and work out wholeheartedly for the first couple of weeks loose interest and then only come 5-8 more times during the rest of the year.
