    Looks good actually. Remember that those home moniters and those at the stores and such are not near as accurate as a cuff!

    Systolic BP is the first number of a blood pressure reading, and it measures arterial pressure during heart contractions. Work

    Diastolic BP is the second number of a blood pressure reading. It measures arterial pressure between contractions. Rest

    Thanks fire pisser...have you any knowledge of the desired SPLIT between the 2 numbers???

    I get mine checked routinely in the local ER and that is something I was told last cycle when it was high (no AI). They said that they look for the split between Sys/Dia to be in a certain range but did not elaborate

    Lol good stuff---according to what I just learned-

    "for adults 18 and older,
    Systolic. Diastolic
    Normal. <120. And. <80
    Prehypertension 120-139 or 80-89
    Hypertension
    Stage 1. 140-159. Or 90-99
    Stage 2. ~>160. Or ~>100

    do it manually. the NIBP cuffs on heart monitors/drug stores are often inaccurate.

    you can even do it by yourself with a bp cuff by palpation.

    inflate the bp cuff, take your pulse at your radial. when the pulse becomes palpable, thats your systolic.

    NOOOO...I'm talking about the range between the top number and bottom number...like maybe the syst is high but thats only bad if the diast is X amount lower or higher.

    There is no "range" between the 2 as you describe.

    Systolic
    Normal = <120
    Prehypertension = 120-139
    Hypertension
    Stage 1 = 140-159
    Stage 2 = >160

    Diastolic
    Normal = <80
    Prehypertension = 80-89
    Hypertension
    Stage 1. = 90-99
    Stage 2. = >100

    Simple put even if you have a health range systole or diastole but the other is in unhealthy range you can still be considered PRE-HYPERTENSIVE OR HYPERTENSIVE.... Example is 110/95, systole is in very good range but diastole fall into stage 1 hypertensive range you are considered to have STAGE 1 HYPERTENSION....

    Next time dont be such a dick to some of the newer guys when you have no idea what your talking about

    Is this directed at me?? If so..please recognize sarcasm, no doubt JP did.

    If you paid attention to post #8 you will see clearly I stated it was simply something I was told and was asking not telling!

    Next time don't be such a dick when YOU have no idea what your talking about!

    The difference between systolic and diastolic is called pulse pressure. Its not commonly used in the treatment of hypertension, but if its too high or too low, both ways indicate the possibility of other conditions.
