Teach me how to tip!!
Ok so i have been researching on the internet about the american phenomanon of "tipping". I just have a few questions.
If i go into a pub and order a drink i hand over the money to pay for it do they take the tip from that? Or do i pay for it and then give the tip? And do i have to let it be known that this is a tip?like say hey mate heres a tip?
If i was having a big drinking session do i tip every round or at the end of the night?
Why do i have to tip taxi drivers? In aus the taxi driver gets 50% of the charge is that not the same in usa?
Im thinking i will be getting a haircut just a small tidy up. Do i pay tip for that? And if so how do i do it? Pay for the hair cut then give then the extra tip or all at once and say this is a tip?
What if i forget to tip will people get aggressive at me?

Tips are given to show the service rendered was good. If you like your haircut tip the hair dresser a couple bucks. When it comes to restaurant tipping I always tip 20% if the service was good and its at the end when your bill comes. Other than that its up to you

tip on everydrink at the bar if you are paying each time. If you run a tab pay at the end.
JASC is also correct if its a busy place throw a good tip in the beginning so you get better service.
15-20% is standard on food.
if you go to a salon for a haircut, most will have little envolopes at the counter when you pay. You put the tip in there and give it to the person ringing you up. If not just go back and tip the person you did it.
You never say this is your tip.If people can't tell your on steroids then your doing them wrong

Make sure that the tip is not all ready included in the total, most are not but I learned a lesson in Miami
you dont have to announce this is the tip, if the bill is $16 you can just give a $20 and say "keep the change" or something similiar.

I didnt realize tipping is specific to N. America. I tip everywhere...even all inclusive resorts where tipping is discouraged.
I ran a bar for a cpl years during college...once you have worked for tips you see it differently

Ya, I learned the hard way, my first night we did a nice meal and 1) got taken to the cleaners 2) wasnt told/didnt notice the tip was added. After the first night we started paying attention found all kinds of things were a scam. Dont get me wrong, I loved it!! BUT next time I'll know where to go, what to do/dont do. Live and learn lol

In the United States 20% is the customary tip. Thats goes for the entire tipping industry. Haircutting, taxis, bartenders, restaurants, etc. You either ask what your bill is or they present you with a check at the end of the service or the night, then YOU calculate what 20% of that is and you add it on to the total. The only thing to watch for is that some restasurants (one the bill has gone over a certain dollar amount) they will automatilcally add the 20% gratutuaity to your total. This is not to try to screw you, this is to ensure that that waiter/waitress does not get f**cked. Some people or just completly inconsiderate and or oblivious, will show up at a restaurant with a party of sevsan or eight, rack up a $350 dinner and drinks bill, and then leave 10 bucks for the waiter like there doind something nice, not realizing that the guy spent half his shift waiting just on your table and was only getting paid 2 bucks an hour the whole time....Just read your bill to make sure it wasnt already added before you start calculating.....
I have worked several jobs in this industry and can tell you for sure the industry standary is 20% of the entire bill

Why the Hell would you tip in a pub? A pint costs way too much these days for me to start dishing out tips in a place like that.
Where I normally tip is in restaurants and the hairdresser. Sometimes in coffee shops or taxis.

Over here in the UK, the average price of a pint of beer is close to 4 pounds now. It's why pubs are slowly dying out.
Waiters and hairdressers dont get much money and I tip them. Taxi drivers by comparison get paid more than waiters, bar staff and hairdressers....does that mean they should not be tipped? Why dont we tip everyone who works in McDonalds.
While in the UK people dont tip in bars or pubs, its not unheard of to buy the barman or barmaiden a drink.

bar tenders here are paid like waiters and tipped for their service. It maybe different where you are from.
If people can't tell your on steroids then your doing them wrong

I tip, you dont
We both walk to the bar together, who gets served first?
If you tip me and you a regular, I will look after you, odd double and shots here and there, you dont tip then you get exactly what you pay for, no more, I'll charge you for a dash coke, peanuts, crisps etc, you tip and ya prob get them for nothing, look after a barman and he look after you, late drink? no problem
I got £6 an hour in UK, I wasnt short of money but if I had to try live off that wage Id be fvcked so I no problem tipping people
Taxi drivers get jack shit these days too, I dont tip them because they wankers
I wish it was 4euro a drink over here...........Last edited by DanB; 12-14-2012 at 05:47 PM.

Yeah it different in Ireland and UK, they get a decent wage in Ireland if your half decent and tips all depend where you work, I worked in places and made 200euro a night in tips and 100 wages, other places I be lucky to make the price of a drink in tips
Your style of club then you can expect good money but you got to know the right people to get them
Didnt know barmen made so little over there though, do you not have a minimum wage over there? its 8.65/hr over here I think

it's simple to figure out 10% of a bill. double what you come up with and leave that. there. you're a nice guy.

That's why it#s best to stand next to the girl with the biggest tits waiting to be served. There's the remote chance you can strike up some banter with her, but better yet, you will likely get served after her!
I did some bar work a few years back, great fun. I don't think I ever got tipped once, where I get tips doing delivery driving quite often.
I sometimes think its a culture thing.

In general anyone who provides a service for you is prob looking for a tip. Waitress, bell hop, barber, taxi driver, bartender, even the lady doing your nails. I try to go 20%(sometimes more) unless service is horrible, just remember anyone can have a bad day.

this is not the bartenders fault. He makes the drinks, he does not make the prices!!! It is not right to take it out on him if you feel the price is to high. If you have a problem with the price then dont go to that establishment. But if you do decide to go, please remember that these guys do not get paid from the establishment exept for a measly 2-4 bucks an hour, there salary comes from the customers/tips. In the united states it is an insult to not tip or to undertip.

that's why if you are getting nothing you dont tip. You tip for Good or exceptional service. You dont tip someone for only doing the minimum. When I go out to eat if I order coffee I expect my cut to never go dry or at least be asked before it's empty and as well as a lot of things already mentioned.
My math is simple. If the service was very good I double the tax and work down from there.
