    copyright infringement notice anyone familiar??

I just got a copyright infringement notice. I guess it was from some movie I got. Is anyone familiar with this?
The notice basically says remove it and block access to it, which I did do!!

Then it says, "Please send us a prompt response indicating the actions you have taken to
resolve this matter, making sure to reference the Notice ID number above in your
    response."

So far, I did NOT reply. Anyone have this happen? What can they do, suspend my internet?

    Thanks

No. I have 15thousand songs i've downloaded, but that was back in the napster days.

Who did you get this notice from? A government agency? Or does it look like spam?

If you are not sure, you can investigate the domain here:

Could be a scam. But also some Internet Service Providers will monitor this stuff. But they never call it "Copyright Infringement". That term is typically used when one is benefiting monetarily from another company/person's work/creation.

The letter came from my internet service provider. In it, its a copy of the letter that they got from NBC. They forwarded it to me. Its not spam because it has the exact dates and times the movie was shared and the name of the movie, etc...

Yeah its getting more and more common. Ive had a few notices with my present ISP (Australia / IINET)

Its up to them what they want to do, they can suspend your Internet / cut of the service permanently depending on how many times they catch you.

They just request that you delete it from your computer, and then email them back to advise that it is what you have done.

Personally I would do what you did and ignore the rest. Wait for further contact before doing any more and then find a good attorney before responding.

Thats what I am thinking. If I respond to their notice with their number, thats admitting guilt. I did stop all file sharing.

For anyone interested, be sure to hide your ips if you plan on doing any sharing.

I have read that many ISPs are going to start throttling or even canceling customers with multiple infringements. I would be careful in the future. You might want to get in contact with them directly via phone to find out if it is legit and tell them you have taken care of it.

From the research that I'm doing, I'm finding this out to be true. They are watching big time.

I use a program called Peer Guardian (widely available check out download dot com for it) that supposedly blocks the RIAA and other ISPs that the programmers know of (they get new isps every week so its not full proof).

Anybody know any other measures? Another thing, set sharing off or to the minimum will usually stop you from getting busted i.e. do not share.

    Cherry,
Can they still get your for downloading only, without sharing? In other words, if I just download it and DO NOT share it, can they still find out I downloaded it only?

It used to be that no they would not go after you as long as you were not sharing.

    HOWEVER

In the last couple of months they have started something with the ISPs where they can send you notices easily. Its a one or two warning system and then they cut your internet off or something. I read a news article about it. The bottom line is the climate is changing when it comes to downloading stuff. So I can't answer your question with 100% accuracy. You can read news articles on it - this is a new thing the ISPs and entertainment companies are trying just starting now.

When I use torrent programs to download I will only get a movie that is a few years old. This is how I cover myself. And I don't share. They really are busting the balls of people going for the latest movies - think Dark Knight Rises and such.

The porn industry is a whole nother beast. The porn industry is aggressively going after people for downloading and attempting to embarass them into settling for thousands of dollars with lawsuit warning letters.

I have methods to rip videos from streaming sites. I can give instructions for youtube and porn streaming sites if anyone needs the instructions pm me. If you know of a website that streams movies my method would probably work for those sites also but I do not know any that stream newish movies only old ones. The reason ripping a streamed movie is safer is because the only points of contact are your computer and the website streaming. When you use a torrent program theres a lot of fingers in the pot and what you are doing is very visible to outsiders.

By the way I have received 3 infringement notices in the past. First notice - from ISP for downloading The Bro Code. ISP notice asked me to delete the file and they would turn back on service. I deleted it. I accidentally had the file sharing for several hours and it was brand new to the net which is what got me. Other two notices were in the mail from law firms. I ignored them and they seem to have gone away. I have since been much more careful about what I dl and how I dl it.

You guys need to look into News Groups instead of file sharing.
