I work nights so I sleep during the day. It sucks because everyone else is up during the day making all kinds of noise. Working nights was a lot easier when I live in a farm house there was no one around and the traffic was minimal.
Several of the nurses that I work with fall asleep during their shift at the desk. Supervisors have caught them on multiple occasions and they inform them that if they are tired to go to the supply closet and take a nap. Supervisors actually set up nap area in two separate supply closets. If I was supervisor those that sleep during work would be terminated. I have been told that they can’t do this because of the, “nursing shortage”. How does a nurse that never leaves the desk and falls asleep during every shift help with staffing? They tell me that on paper we need to meet a ratio of staff to patients depending on unit. So supervisors ensure that nurses that actually work get the most difficult patients because they know that these nurses will take care of them.

(raises hand) I get tired at 4 or 5am. Sleep is sleep though, of you can get it.

I have worked nights for years. I have always been a night owl and even when I had to get up at 5am for work I would stay up to 12-1am.
The hard part is switching from days to nights since I typically work 12 hrs shifts so I work 3 days one week and 4 the next. The last couple of months sleep has been better and more regular than most of the last couple of years but there are still times I am up 48hrs +
I try to take a 1hr nap at work during my break once in a while. I either just go to a dark conference room and lay on the floor or bring in my zero degree lounge chair.
It's been proven that even if you got good/normal sleep just working nights will take 3-5 years off your life. Working nights and having poor sleep of course takes more away. I think I only have 1 or 2 years left. lol
EVERYONE at my work that has had to go on nights for even 1 week say they dont want to ever do it again and have sympathy for us. Those who have never worked nights have no clue.

Depends on what shift work puts me on. If I need to sleep during the day, I'll drink some Bullet Proof by MusclePharm (or just take melatonin pills). Good deep sleep helps the body repair and build new muscle. Work out to break down, sleep in to build up.

Your body still needs some sunlight. You make vitamin D from being in the sun. So don't be so much of a vampire that you deprive yourself of something your body needs.

Lately I have been. I've been taking naps for than anything, haven't really slept a full 7 hours in the past 5 or 6 days. In and out every 2 to 3 hours. I need to get back on a schedule.

You ain't kidding.
Last week I started a new job working from 10pm-8am 4 days a week.
Not allowed to sleep on lunch either--so that's out.
This has been the hardest week of my life so far.
I gotta find a groove.
It's even harder for me because the last 5 months I wasn't working. I was going to the gym @ 2am because I couldn't deal with the crowds.
I can train on my 3 days off at my current Golds, but next week I'm signing up at this small tiny gym here in Henderson NV so when I do go before work, the place wont be as crowded as Golds.
Gotta find a groove....gotta find a groove....
