The Worst and Most Idiotic Sayings

This thread won't be for everyone. As a matter of fact, no one may give a flying pile of monkey poop, but it might be a good discussion for some.

There are certain little sayings and phrases we're all very familiar with. Certain "words of wisdom" that seem to popup every time a related situation occurs. And they're often said in a way to make them sound insightful, but when we look at them at their core they're idiotic. My favorite sayings to hate:

1. "Our religious views should not affect how we see things politically." A similar one "Politicians should not make decisions that are based on their religious views."

*Why it's stupid: It's impossible to separate these issues. Our religious beliefs or the lack thereof determine and greatly influence how we see the world. Most all political decisions have an element of a moral judgement that needs to be made. All such decisions are, whatever they may be, are based on how we see the world, and how we see the world is greatly influenced by our religious beliefs. Again, for those that are slow, this applies to the strongest atheist in the world as well. His lack of spirituality defines how he sees the world and therefore influences his decisions.

2. "Time heals all."

*Why it's stupid: It's stupid because it's simply not true. There are instances in life, things that happen that are so painful they change who we are as a person for the rest of our lives. We may very well choose to move on from these things as best we can, but the scars are still there. And when the scar is deep, certain things can trigger an emotional response that will often surprise us as we may have thought we moved on. "Time heals all" it's merely something people say to make themselves feel better about a situation.

3. "We are more enlightened and smarter than our ancestors." A similar one "we are more advanced and evolved as a species."

*Why it's stupid: Man is simply man. The same desires, fears and thoughts that have always existed still exist today. We have not become more or less evolved in our hearts in minds, we simply have better technology, and better technology doesn't mean we're smarter. Technology simply builds on itself exponentially over time, and the more it grows the faster it grows. It continually compounds on itself over time, but it doesn't change the nature of man.

4. "All problems can be solved by sitting down and talking to your adversary respectfully."

*Why it's stupid: It's stupid because it's a ridiculous comment. If you're an American and you sit down across the table from a member of Al-Qaeda do you honestly believe they care about what you have to say? Do you honestly believe they will leave the table with no desire to rip your heart out and that of your families? Of course they'll still want to kill you and everyone you've ever spoken to; after all, that's the very core of their existence. The point, blind rage filled hate cannot be swayed by grand words and to imply it can only shows one's weak mind.

5. "Steroids are bad. Dr. Gary Wadler says so.

*Why it's stupid: Because Dr. Wadler is an idiot. Just to keep things slightly steroid related, lol!
