Smoking in the workplace help :(
Hey guys so I just started my new job working in what I guess you would call a steel mill. The first thing I noticed is literally everybody working there was smoking a cigarette at the same time.
All the work takes place in a large semi covered shop, meaning It has a roof but no sides. So for 12 hours a day I'm in close contact with these assholes smoking cigarette after cigarette breathing it all in, i came home with a headache.
It's not something I can go to management about because they allow it, that was one of the first questions somebody asked. Wtf can I do?

Unfortunately even though I'm sure there are laws to protect you, I would just look for another job or deal with it. That may be an unhealthy choice.

^ yeah. Human Resource departments are not there for the employees. They exist to protect the company. That's how I train mine at least.

Maybe I can contact OSHA anonomously, there's no way this can be legal. This job pays so good for me at this point on my life though

In Massachusetts it's illegal to smoke in the workplace. I hate this state and their liberal ways but I support this type of law 10000000%. Smokers are ASSHOLES!!!!!

^^^ this, I mean you could try to do something but if everyone smokes, what's going to happen is they will find a reason to get rid if you. You could try wearing a safety mask but idk what it would do. I do know second hand smoke is not good, just start looking for a new job.

Good luck filing complaints. Being the rookie your work life will most likely be made more miserable than it is now.
I would walk around with a squirt bottle of water & take care of the problem one by one.

That's right, OSHA only deals with safety regs.

Lol I wonder who complained about the 99 out of 100 employees that smoke.

We could smoke in our shop, but when Wisconsin went smoke free in public workplaces, it was their loophole to go non smoking in the shop, and on all company property. Not even e- cigs are allowed. Union couldn't do squat.
It sucks for you though, not a leg to stand on here, I don't think. But I would think working in a steel mill, or foundry, isn't any better. That air isn't clean by any means.

What's with people now days. Man up, its not going to kill you. I worked around peoe who smoled for years in offices and factories. If you don't like it find another job because I believe in the Vulcan ways, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or one.

Even as a former smoker, I'd do what I could to get it away from non-smokers. Hell, I knew it was nasty.

I don't consider smoking a "need." It's not like Insulin or Oxygen where people would die without it....However, if the job pays that well, I would just suck it up and deal with it. The economy is shit. You don't really have too much room to be picky. I really hate smoking, but if I had to breathe that shit in to pay my bills and put food on the table - so be it.

We used to have a mechanic in our shop that would complain about the other guys smoking but then he would run the
diesel trucks inside with no exhaust system hooked to it because he was to lazy to put it on.

im sure you knew how this place was before you started.
I would not work there but I think its pretty shitty that you probably knew what goes on, accepted the job, and now want to report and penalize the very company you agreed to be a part of.
just sounds wrong.....go get a new job.

If there is law against it in your area, contact the gov/inspectors ( without giving name) if not... sorry man,,, another job?
I HATE it. I worked at night club for years doing security, and when i was stuck at door checking ID's there was ALWAYS everyone out there smoking ( not allowed inside in canada, thank god!) and it really sucked. mind you i wold from time to time smoke a cigar... but that was like 1 a month... i dont want to stand there breathing it night after night! itsIf there is law against it in your area, contact the gov/inspectors ( without giving name) if not... sorry man,,, another job?

Alright you Internet tough guys telling me to man up listen here, I was hired through a temp agency all I was told was that I would be working with steel in a warehouse. First time I saw the place was my first day of work. Penalizing the company give me a fuking break, having people smoking all day hurts productivity, smoking has absolutely nothing to do with buisness. Don't tell me what I probably knew behind your computer screen

Nobody is being an "internet tough guy" here bro. Sounds like you're the new guy at work tryin to change everything up and you're the minority to top it all off. If they aren't breaking any laws and no one else gives a shit do what austinite said and either wear a mask or find a new job.

Yeah trolling with almost 20, 000 post. LoL
Yeah I figured as one of the ENTITLED group. You are probably on board with green peace, the ozone whackos, global warming and PETA since you seem to think walking through a cloud of smoke is going to give you cancer. LoL
Your more likely to get colon cancer 10x1 than lung cancer being around smokers. Nope, I'm not a smoker. I'm just a realist.
