Video: 21:46 - Why do we sleep?

Russell Foster gives us an outstanding presentation on sleep. He discusses details on why we sleep, what happens in the brain when we sleep and how to get the most from sleep. This is entirely important for anyone who is training to improve their physiques. It's not exactly a short video, so if you're at work or unable to watch it now, please take the time to watch it soon. It's an excellent video.

I saw a study on this yesterday and they said basically it is to clear out the junk, empty the trash like rebooting a computer.

I must have a LOT of trash backed up since I typically get 4-5 hrs a night, on a goodnight.

Oh great, mental illness is directly connected to sleep or lack of. Can I use that as my defense???

^ Yeah my sleep patterns haven't really been consistent. Some nights I get a few hours only and others I sleep 7 hours. Never really slept longer than 8 hours unless I'm sick.

I think 2x last week I got over 6hrs sleep and that is the most I have gotten in weeks if not months. Honestly I go 24hrs without sleep at least 1x a week. 48hrs without sleep at least 1x ever 2 months and 72hrs 2+ times a year for the last several years. No caffine or other stimulates associated with it, just get busy with xyz.

It doesnt help I work nights, 4 days one week and 3 days the next week 12hr shifts.

Wow. I don't know how I would adapt to that work schedule. Crazy. When I had my 6 months of unemployment, I rarely got any sleep. Some days I'd sleep at night, sometimes mid-day. I felt like shit to be honest. Getting back to a normal schedule (even though sleep is not consistent) certainly helped in many areas.

I'm not sure either. I know my memory is sh*t, concentration is pretty non existant but some how I fake it and make it through day by day. Doesnt help we just bought a 2nd house and I am doing a MAJOR remodel on it. Due to $$$ I'm doing most of the work myself so on my days off I spend 12hrs+ there and on my work days after being at work 12hrs I spend 3-6hrs at the new place.

I would be 2x as far with the new place if I didnt have a "friend" helping me that I have had to go back and re do 90% of everything he did or make him redo it. He is no longer helping me.

I have been taking ambien off and on (more on than off) for about 6yrs+ I'm working on the off stage again right now trying to see if I can get off it completely but it sure is nice to be able to take it and get to sleep right away and sleep for 4hrs+ once in a while.

Wow man. You're a champ. None of that can be easy. Sometimes there just isn't enough hours in the day. Gotta do what you gotta do.

I love stuff like this, will watch soon.

I once read that If we didnt dream we'd hallucinate in real time and go insane.

I can attest to that with one experience. Driving back from LA, went through death valley. Got so hot, dehydrated and tired. I literally saw horses running next to me for miles. No joke. Freaked me out for 50 miles until I found a rest stop.

    I love sleep!
I have alot of issues getting to sleep, but once im asleep im good for 8-10hrs if i have the time to :-d.
we also get "high" every night, DMT is out put from our pineal gland and is interconeccted wiht dreams. no one really knows WHY we need to sleep though.
why laying there not moving, eyes closed, at all at calm peace (in trance like state like meditating) with say light music maybe, does NOT have the same effect as sleeping for real. we know a HACK of alot about what happens when we dont sleep or dont sleep well.
we know what happens while sleeping (GH output for eg) but the WHY i think is still not found. you can be on gh , in trance, relaxed in dark and not move for 8 hrs but you dont be the same as sleeping. they did soem research on this type of thing, was very interesting.
Ill watch vid soon. I would love to have more answers on this. maybe there is something I or others have overlooked that is out now.

DMT is something that really needs to be explored more. i think of our minds more as like a satalight dish, not simple an organ that is not effected my out side sense stimulation or energies and I believe DMT is the key to levels of consciousness that otherwise are untappable. internal or external, DMT is an interesting compound. I know this is a no rec drug forum. I am not implying to use DMT. I am saying you use it weather you like it or not and that it is a big part of everyones lives and VERY important in the sleep cycle..
excessive fluoride consumption calcifies the pineal gland (DMT is out put from this area), and is why i avoid normal toothpasts ( i use fluoride free now) and avoid drinking the water int he city ( i use bottled spring from out upnorth) because they add it to the local water and i believe it is very bad for you.. I wont get into my conspiracy theories on that though...

I kinda have a theory that dreaming is actually an evolutionary coping/stress mechanism in most animals. I was watching my cat sleeping recently and I think he was having a bad dream cause he was twitching like crazy and occasionally growling. So bad dream, good dream, we all have them.

Each day we take in ridiculous amounts of information, not to mention the stress of every day life. I sometimes think dreaming is the minds way, essentially, of taking a shit. Not letting certain thoughts get bottled up for too long.

I mean if we slept and didn't dream, and started hallucinating, well we wouldn't be around for long because of how super reliant we are on our 5 senses that are in-tune with our surroundings.

Releasing feel good compounds into our system might be our bodies way of just keeping calm, as we know not all dreams are pleasant, thus preventing us from waking up.

I wonder if those with sleep problems or maybe people who dream less than others/dream less pleasant things are more prone to drug abuse?

Interesting thought IMO but then again..... Drug abuse comes about from many things. I'd still say tho that stress is a major cause..... Funny because if we abuse drugs because of stress - we also "de-stress" by releasing a hallucinogen into our system while dreaming.

How the hell do you function? lol. I made it to the 72 hour mark a couple months ago. Paranoid about everything lol. I would jump at every noise, kept thinking people were following me, etc. I hope that doesn't happen again to me lol.

Careful about that. When you get to the point you are starting to do permanent damage and it might not go away. That's what happens to most meth/crack addicts and why you call them tweakers.

After 48hrs I usually don't feel much different. Close to 72 hrs I feel drunk, have a hard time walking a straight line but never feel jumpy. I have only done 72 hrs a couple of times and hopefully not more in the future.

I have actually gotten close to 8hrs sleep a couple of time the last couple of weeks.

Damn I know that feeling. When I don't sleep I get very scared. Paranoid about "things" not people just things, then my eyes play tricks on me.

That's it. I've had it with America. I'm going to the Philipines so that I can claim my orgy of 18 year old asian sluts. Maybe that'll help my insomnia?

Who said they were 18? I think a couple were older. lol
It has it's pros and cons. I would defiantly stay awake longer but when I slept I slept good because I was worn out.

They are all 3 still friends and sent me a recent picture not long ago. They are still looking good and asking when I'm coming back.
