I like to sound like I am from the UK. All I really know is:
Hi mate.
Hey bloke.
That is rubbish.
Damn mate that bird is smashing.Realist: A person who sees things as they truly are. A practical person. The pessimist complains about the wind; The optimist expects it to change; The realist adjusts the sails. — William Arthur Ward

I will allow the first one.
The second wouldn't be said like that more like 'there's this bloke down the pub'
Third one ok, but that's a playground thing for young kids I think. ( Rubbish of course is the correct word for rubbish.) That's shite - is a bit more of an adult version
The last one? Hmmmm, i checked with my dad and it was widely used in the 60's
Bird is a commonly used word still though.
Hope that brings you up to date

He's after getting a Large Goods Vehicle Licence.
Clarky, a few years back before I went to Uni, I went in for a course for one of these as I thought it would be a quick way to earn some cash for a relatively simple job.
I did a course with a company called ClearStone. At the time it was about 500 quid and you go to a seminar where they tell you a little about the job, then you do a one week crash course with a test at the end. I cant remember but I think you have to do a theory as well, same as a car, only there are tons more questions as there are tons more laws for large vehicles, for instance it is illegal to drive on roads if you have mud on the wheels, etc. If you're thinking of doing this, make sure you get the theory book on LGV's and get your friends/family to test you.
Part of the practical involves reversing at an angle into a space, doing a emergency stop and then going out driving for a bit with an instructor. I didn't pass as I was a bit too eager to pull away at some traffic lights :s
I never went back to it, but theres fairly decent money to be made, but looking back, its a bit of a boring and lonely job.

Well good luck mate. The instructor I had was a total toss pot which sort of put me off from going back. How much is it now?? It's pretty decent money, and there is ALWAYS work available. Something you can take with you to other countries as well, like Oz where they get paid loads to drive long distance and their road trains.

I'm actually a big believer in crash courses, I think its a pretty effective way of learning something. Its weird cause I struggled with reversing the worst, but nailed it on the test. If I wasnt in a hurry at the lights, then who knows what would have happened. Just keep calm and ALWAYS be aware that you are in a much larger vehicle than a car, hence you have to take wider arcs in corners. Man, lots and LOTS of gear changes as well, lol!
1200 is a sting though. Cant believe how much it is these days.

Any friends you know who have a yard and let you practice reversing? The driving forward is handy enough but the revrrsing is tricky, just to get a feel of it before you do the crash course and do the test so its weighted to more your advantage. Its something I would do personally
