sleeping?
I have major issues sleeping, i mean it's 10.40am here in the UK and i haven't slept in almost 24 hours. What do people do about sleeping, any suggestions on how to improve sleep, and maybe anyway i can knock myself? Would love to know if anyone has the same issues. It's so bad. I wonder if it can be called as insomnia yet.

melatonin can be very helpful. You also try getting your pineal gland to better regulate your day/night cycles by minimising electric light after sundown, and stopping all screens (telly/computer/mobile) at least a couple of hours before bed. I know someone who got great results from that. All the extra light stimulation probably was keeping his body from making the melatonin he needed to sleep naturally.

My sleep has changed a lot since I was a kid. I would normally sleep for 12-13 hours but now I normally only get 10-11 a day.

I've heard melatonin is good to help. I also find it hard to get to sleep at night if i've taken any sort of nap during the day.

I go through periods where I have major sleep issues. I'm usually good for 2-3 consecutive nights of full-blown insomnia, per month.
I fall asleep fine, out like a light within 10 mins flat, no problem. But when I have these nights, I wake up a couple hours later, and am hyper alert immediately upon waking. I mean, I could take a fukcing SAT right there on the spot. Mind starts racing, anxiety builds, and that's it - I'm just up counting the minutes until it's morning.
Nothing has helped. I've taken plenty of melatonin, GABA, OTC sleep meds, even prescription Ambien - nothing. Wide, wide awake. *yawn*
Even on my 'good' nights, I only get 6 hours or less, but that's more due to my schedule than sleep issues.

Definitely go to the doctor. I'm having scar tissue cleaned out of my nose and septum realigned. For about 5 years now I've had sleep apnea, horrible allergies and insomnia. Melatonin, tylonal pm, and zma always helped me sleep. With the ZMA you will have some crazy ass dreams too.
But go to the doctor. Going to the doctor led me to PR-ville, population me.
Hope the best buddy

I can fall asleep no problem, but staying asleep is where I struggle.

I used to suffer from both type of insomnia, failure to go to sleep and failing to stay asleep. My advice, pop 1 melatonin (5mg) and go to bed every night (even on weekends) at the same time.
Do not read in bed, do not watch tv. Sleep and have a little fun in the day time is the only thing you should be doing... It will suck for a while, but in a week or so, you will be on a pattern and sleeping like a baby.

What's wrong with you guys? Not sleeping isn't healthy.

Go to the dr and get ambien or lunesta. I've used both, just make sure it's the time release one and don't eat a few hours before taking. I'm a shift worker and no matter if it's 2 am or 2 pm either of these will knock you out for at least 6 hours in about 20 minutes of taking. You might be a little groggy or foggy when you wake up but it doesn't last long,1 cup of coffee and I'm g2g.

I just saw that you're 19. If you can't sleep at 19, there is a problem. Either you are screwing yourself up in some way with crazy hours/screens all night/chemicals, or there is a more serious problem and you need a physician.
Straighten out your schedule, maybe take a magnesium supplement before bed to help your muscles relax, a small amount of melatonin, and if it doesn't get better after a week or so, see a doc.

I agree with Austinite and Angel - go see a doc.
Problem with Ambien and other sleep aids, even over the counter are they are addictive.. Ambien in the normal sense, the others in the sense that they can lead to a dependance. Your body won't physically let you sleep without taking them. During the period when I had insomnia, I was on antidepressants, ambien, really old anti-phychotics (yes Virginia really old meds still are used to treat modern problems). Insomnia was so bad, I was almost suicidal. Got a new sleep study done by a new doc. Put me on a anti-anxiety med and taught me how to go to sleep. Which was my advice posted above....
Oh - for those who have problems sleeping another piece of advice.... no caffeine after 3 pm.

like everyone else said, seeing a doctor is your best bet. i also struggle with trying to fall asleep from time to time, i take 1mg of xanax if i really can't sleep and it knocks me out right away. melatonin works for some people and is easy to get over the counter at any pharmacy.

Zquil works well. It is like Niquil but only for sleeping.
