The gym is going to suck the next few weeks.

Uggggg with all the stupid people making their New Years Resolutions that they won't stick with the gym is going to suck ass the next 2 weeks. Luckily these people have no motivation to actually stick with it and change their lives so the rest of us that workout all year will have to suffer.

I wonder if it is better for the gyms - more people line up at the beginning of the year to pay annual dues but don't attend, and this gives the gym more money for better equipment, that most of those people are not around to appreciate (and use/depreciate). Just looking for a positive angle.

Very true Angel, I like to joke around about the resolutioners at the first of the year but it is a good thing for all of us.
I still think to myself when I see them that I was in their shoes one time.

It would be interesting to see the business model for this. I work out at home, but I don't really like crowds and would be annoyed for sure for the first couple of weeks every year. At least you can take solace that they are probably subsidising the membership for the regulars. I wonder what percentage of people that join at the beginning of the year attend long term, like you.

I am friends with the owner of my gym and I asked him that same question last year. The owner tracks every members usage of the gym during the year and about 10% of the new members become regulars for the first year. The second year it tapers down to about 5%.

For what its worth, I try to stay out of the gym for the most part during january. When I do go, its early in the morning. Its just too frustrating to wait on equipment and work around people who are there to socialize. the first few weeks of january are a good time to get serious about diet and lose some holiday pounds with extra cardio at the track. By february 1, it will be back to normal - always happens.
