Horrible local incident.....
Every morning, when I go from hotel 1 (where my living quarters are at) to hotel 2 (where my office is at), which are about 150 feet apart, there is this young boy, maybe 9 or 10, maybe even 8, is on the side of the road selling hard boiled eggs. I usually look at him from the warm confines of my armored vehicle. Today, on the way back to hotel 1, we were following an ISAF armored vehicle driven by an American ISAF soldier, driving his vehicle very slowly, and in reverse. He attempted to make a three point u turn in the driveway of hotel 1. unfortunately, he didn't see the sewage canal on the side of the street, nor the kid that was sitting on the canal (made of concrete and tile) with his legs dangling over the edge.
The ISAF soldier lost control of his vehicle, even though he was driving about as fast as I could walk, and the vehicle jumped over one edge of the canal, and banged onto the other side, with one wheel inside the canal itself. The vehicle landed more or less on top of the child. Most of the damage sustained by the boy was to his legs. They somehow pulled out the boy from underneath the vehicle. At this point, I'm not sure the soldier was aware there was a child involved. The soldier didn't get out of the vehicle right away, and when he did, and he realized there was a child involved, you could see the soldiers body language go from knowing he was in trouble, to something else. The soldiers body slumped when he realized what happened to the boy. At this point, my driver and I realized there was no accessing hotel 1, and we needed to get out of the street. the driver told me to lock my doors (they are supposed to be locked anyways) and we returned to hotel 2. Later on, I learned about the rest of the story. (this all happened 43 minutes ago, btw)
when the vehicle hit the child, it pinched his legs between the concrete of the sewage channel, and the vehicle. both legs experienced major compound fractures, and bones sticking out, with very severe cuts to his legs. one of the security guys claimed to have found a piece of the child's bone in the street. At the point of the pinch, which is about a 12 inch length of his legs, it pressed his leg and bone flat, to within I'd say a half and three quarters of an inch thick. the child was scooped up and taken to some medical facility. I imagine the child will lose both legs. losing the legs is easier for the medical facility than it is to try and save the leg, plus all the rehab. guys without legs, there is no need for rehab if there is no leg to rehab.
As a parent, this is very disturbing to me. When I saw this, saying I was angry was an understatement.
Anyways, needed to get this off my chest.
Thanks for listening

I don't know what to say either. After a conference call meeting this evening, we were all just kind of sitting there, and I made the comment that I feel I should be doing something.
The general consensus is I should not interfere. End of story.
Back home I would never go quietly into the night, but here?

Certainly puts things in perspective. Gives us something to consider next time we start complaining about how bad we have it.

I have seen dead children....drug them off of the roads in America's war on terror. What you don't want to do is allow yourself to become numb like I did. At the time I had no choice but to convince myself it was not big deal. That sh!t catches up with you sooner or later. I'm glad to see you are venting about it, which is far better than suppressing it.
