Looking for a new little commuter car.................
don't know shit about cars. Thinking low maintenance and high mileage, but no hybrids. Under $20k. Prefer made in USA but will consider others.
Any ideas before I start looking?
Thanks!

Some Toyota, Honda and Nissan models are assembled in the US. So if it matters if the company is not US but the vehicle is assembled here that would open up more options.
Also you can get some relatively new cars with not a bunch if miles fairly reasonable too. So many options to choose from TR.
I like the Ford Fusion but not sure if you can get a new one for 20K. Maybe used?

I would go with a honda. As long as those things have oil in them they will run forever.

You can get a few different Hyundai's for under 20k new with great warranty, as much as I hate that they are decent vehicles, I am thinking of getting one for my kid.

Timing belts every 60k miles for $800, when it comes time to get warranty work on engine or transmission you better have maintenance records they pull out all stops not to cover. I know my good friend works in service for a hyundai dealer (worked at others as well) and tells me some horror stories. No thanks. Right now and going forward into the future gm is doing everything to rebuild it's name, I see them covering stuff out of warranty just to keep a happy customer.
Just what I see and hear.

Look into a good used car. I got a Toyota Camry a few years ago and I have not had a problem with it other than tires and a battery. We also got a used Nissan Murano and it gets great millage and no issues. Why waste money on a new car?

As far as a small city-hopper, I'm a big fan of the Fiat 500. Cheap, sporty, and looks sweet.

Toyota sold more than any other manufacturer this year. Says a lot.

I had an 89 Toyota Pickup. bought it new. Hauled it off five years ago. When I did, I had over 400,000 miles on it. More or less engine and power train intact/original. I made sure I changed the oil at least once a year....
....so if I paid $12k for it, then this vehicle "cost" me about 3 cents a mile, if you look at the purchase price/total mileage data.
I would love to get another vehicle even at six cents a mile?????
yeah, I know, "high hopes"

I work for Ford and pay very close attention to this data. Before that in 2012 Ford was number 1 over Toyota, but only by 100,000 or so.

Can't you just use the corporate jet for awhile?
-

corporate jet?
for too long, I had to use the corporate armored vehicle, the corporate driver, the corporate body guard, the corporate translator and the corporate trail armored vehicle with a four APPF security team on my six just to leave the compound.
why? does the corporate jet have corporate side winder missiles attached to the corporate wings?

Conclusion to this thread:
Ended up with a new Mazda 3 with the tour package. Red. I've put several hundred miles on it. Average is 36.5 mpg. Rated at 41/31 or something like that. Has a bit more rabbit than the VW, Toy, or Hyun. Diff is a six speed auto and a 2.0 liter engine. the rest had 1.8 liter engines. So it serves it's purpose.
