There was a time that cigars and whiskey (often together) were "hobbies" of mine. These were my favs. Glenlivet Nadurra if Scotch is your twist. Midleton Very Rare for an Irish Whiskey. Basil Hadyen's for a Burbon.

Try: Louis XIII de Rémy Martin
I had a shot of this for my bday a year ago. Unfortunately it cost over $200.
And I actually threw it back instead of sipped it. Dumb me... flavor was so good.

Just saw on the news. Houston bar is selling a shot of whiskey...forget name I'll look it up in a minute with details. But single shot is $750.

pretty sure CR is a canadian whiskey.
most "american whiskey" is called "bourbon", because it is distilled in bourbon county, KY. (note your evan williams bottle) jack daniels is distilled in TN, so it is called "whiskey", not bourbon.
crown royal was my drink of choice for awhile. however, about 5 years ago i switched to brandy - smoother flavor and it just "sits with me better"...kind of hard to explain. my favorite now is E&J XO.Last edited by rollingthunder; 10-25-2014 at 02:37 PM. Reason: fix typo

I know this ya big dummy!
I was lumping it in to contrast AGAINST Scotch whiskey. Big difference between Scotch and the others....
.......no one goes into a bar and says "I'll have a Canadian", do they?
So anyways, my son brought home some Rye Whiskey, and I had a couple of shots before bed. Man, that stuff was real rough. I think it was from Costco, so I was thinking it would be better than that.

well, ok. you were "clumsy" in phrasing your post, then. whiskey is identified by where it is distilled - "irish" whiskey, "scotch" whiskey, "canadian" whiskey, "bourbon" whiskey...
scotch and bourbon usually ordered in a bar with those "short-hand" terms. nobody goes into a bar and says "i'll have an american" either.
don't think i've ever had rye.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but good conversation here.
I'm a jack single barrel, on the rocks, for sipping. Jack and coke for more social occasions.
Never had Scotch. But was just gifted a bottle of glenlivet 12yr.
How should I approach enjoying this? What should I expect? WILL I enjoy it?

glenlivet is good. scotch is an acquired taste. it is a little smoky and goes great either on the rocks, neat, or splash of water.
