Best place to buy a laptop
600 dollar budget, I'm pretty tech illiterate. Is best buy a complete rip off?

Tigerdirect is a good place. I saw newegg mentioned also. Best buy isn't terrible but if you find something you like there - it doesn't hurt to cross reference a search online to see if what you found in the store can be had cheaper elsewhere.

Get a chromebook from amazon. The Acer c720 with an intel i3 and 4 GB of ram is a great laptop for $250-300.
Chrome os runs is insanely fast.

The Lenovo Yoga is priced quite well on the Lenovo website, otherwise I'd buy off Amazon. Conversely, buying an older MacBook Pro, then swapping in an SSD, placing the old HD in the optic drive, and increasing ram is great if you're comfortable doing so. I have an early 2011 aluminum unibody MBP with a Sony EVO Pro SSD and 16g of ram; runs like a hummingbird on meth.

Honestly, $600 isn't very much money when buying a computer. You get exactly what you paid for with computers (as with everything).
One thing they don't tell you when you go laptop shopping is the make of and the bus speed of the motherboard. There is also differences in the speeds of ram memory and hard drives.
For around $650-800 you can get yourself a decent laptop with an i5 class of processor. If battery life is an issue for you, you want a 5th gen processor. They use considerably less power than their 4th gen counterparts (they're all still using that i3, i5 and i7 classification). And there are also reasonably big differences between processors within their naming scheme. Not all 5th gen i7's are alike.
Best buy price matches newegg, costco, walmart, target, fry's, tiger direct, amazon, rakuten, buy, and a bunch of others (supposing they're both the shipper and seller). So if they sell the same exact model, best buy won't be undersold. Problem is that most retailers strike deals with the manufacturers and they come up with "exclusive" models with their stores that are identical to the exclusive models being sold at other stores (except for the model number) so that you can't price match.
One thing you should consider is what you want the computer to be able to do for you.

I think looking into the chromebook is a great start - and great starting place for one - I still use mine and like numbere mentioned I didn't pay more than 250 for it... I'm pretty sure it would have everything he would need/& want
I also have a google chromebook(not up to speed on all the technological gadgets but it's very easy) even for meLast edited by NACH3; 08-20-2015 at 09:39 AM.

A chromebook is the best bang for your buck right now, especially for a student.
If she wants immersive games she can put it in developer mode and dual boot linux. Then she can run steam with the added bonus of being able to learn how to code.
Being able to write code is going to be important in any kids future now a days.Last edited by numbere; 08-20-2015 at 09:41 AM.

My only regret is that I didn't buy one sooner lol. MY 720 with an i3 runs circles around my macbook. Have about 50 tabs open right now and it boots in under 10 seconds.
Learning code when you're an adult is like learning another language. It's much easier to do when you're a kid.

I would definitely check and make sure a chromebook will support the games and other activities your kid may want to do.
My thought would be if you get a decent laptop it should do everything the kid will need (school wise) for the next 3 years or so, therefore it might be worth considering.
I got a surface pro 3 with a mid level package and its a beast. All the speed in the world, boots the OS in 10-15 seconds and no worries about hard-drive problems. Its also something you can expand on, I got a docking station, 26" high res monitor, wireless mouse and keyboard so its my road warrior but when I get home I can slip it into the dock and have all the comforts of a conventional workstation.

Military px store or shop local sale adds. Fry's have good sales.

Frys gives out bad advice though. The salesmen there work on commission there so they have an agenda. On top of that, the amount of commission they get isn't necessarily based on what's most expensive. So often times, they push shit on you because they make more money on it.

That's the thing though. Most people don't do any research in to their purchases. I used to figure it was just electronics (these people will label themselves computer illiterate and helpless in that field), but they use the same lazy mentality in all of their purchase. Like when they go buy cars, I'd say the overwhelming majority don't know shit about cars or even about what they want in a car. These people are suckers and the salesmen know it.
