Mechanics in my area make bank. I worked as a diesel mechanic for an International Dealership. Top out pay was 30$ an hour with great benefits. My father runs a body shop for Covenant Transport and makes excellent money.

In the same area, COs make about 12$ an hour...

It depends on where you are. There is huge demand for mechanics in my area. Mechanics make great money here compared to other fields.

I think as a mechanic you don't do that well unless you have your own garage. I pay my mechanic £70 (so approximately $100) an hour, and that's an absolute bargain for him (he's a former aston martin engineer and really is a master) - at the dealer, they want £100 an hour for people who don't know what they're doing (I'm generalising, there are some competent people at dealers, but it is a crapshoot, and I've not met one yet that compares to my guy).

I think you can do well with your own garage if you like what you're doing, and then do it really well, with care and pride, like you're working on your own car, and then you can charge a good amount, but customers appreciate your work and learn to trust you. So essentially that is being a businessman (and dealing directly with the public) and a mechanic both. My mechanic, since leaving corporate life and starting his own business, now has a core set of good customers who like his quality work, and are happy to pay more to get it. They tend to be people with really good quality cars, and they really look after them. He's got about a three to four month wait for major projects, which he fits in with day to day stuff, and so he's booked about a quarter in advance, and he does really well. But it's a different life (he loves it, but he loves working on cars) and isn't like just showing up at work, doing your thing and then leaving. If you don't love it, I don't know if that would be for you, and then you're stuck with someone else charging the market rate for your work, and then giving you half.

The carpenter thing doesn't sound half bad but I would imagine if it were that easy to get that type of money everyone would be doing it.
Why don't you take an aptitude test to discover what you might be overlooking?

As far as $, well it makes life easier...
