hi Cajun, the only one Iv tried was the fitbit and actually loved it unfortunately it stopped charging after 2 months and since I won it in a raffle I couldn't return it to a store...Im going to do a bit of research but intend to buy another one in the future...I really liked how I could monitor my stats anytime on my phone or computer and the sleep tracking was an eye opener, I had no idea how many times woke up or was restless at night...that's my 2 cents...im thinking jawbone for my next one...

I was given a Fitbit ChargeHR for Christmas this year. I tried it out during my cardio workout yesterday, the main thing I wanted it for was to monitor my heart rate during my cardio workout.

Anyway, the result is I think it is useless and I wouldn't recommend one if you want it for accurate and reliable heart rate monitoring. Why? Well, it has three main issues I found:

    1. The screen only stays on for 5 seconds after you press the button or double tap the device (hard). This is a real pain because you can't just have a quick look to check your heart rate, you have to take both hands off what you are doing to press or tap and then wait for a second or so for the screen to boot up. This is a real nuisance if you are using a stepper or a cross trainer and in my opinion is a huge design error. The website says this is for battery saving, but I would rather charge more often and be able to see the reading as always on when exercising.

    2. The heart rate readings are not reliable. Sometimes when you are exercising it doesn't pick up the heart rate at all and sometimes the rate given is way off. For example, one time it was saying 78 when the monitor on the stepper was saying 115. I know the 115 was the correct reading. Having said that, around 70% of the time it gave an accurate reading.

    3. Outside in the sun or even bright overcast, I find the screen very hard to read (kind of like an iPhone). This would make it very annoying if you want to use it for jogging or cycling on the road (which I don't). The numbers are also very small, which I can only just read without my reading glasses, even inside in darker conditions.

My suggestion is that if you want something for serious heart monitoring during exercise, shop around for alternatives.

I have used pretty much all of them as it is part of the job. The general feeling is that this is for motivation and I doubt you need much more. It's sort of like all these devices were designed by a Jewish mother, it is a master of guilt tripping you into moving more. For me, there is way to much manual labor around these devices and the it seems the formulas they use to track calories and such is way off. I am sure all this will be hugely improved, but I feel like we are still in the beginning stages of this stuff.
