Anyone into knives?
Hello all, longtime member couch here, under a new account.
Figured I'd post about my new hobby/career, which is collecting and modding quality folding knives and high end balisongs (butterfly knives).
What started out as s hobby quickly turned into a massive addiction and ultimately a full time job.
Benchmade, zero tolerance, hogue, crk, Medford, obscene, etc folders
Hom, JK, hazetac, Benchmade, maxace, brs, eos, etc balis
Here's some pics of my stable and sone of my work.
All fellow blade freaks please post up, also nooks are Open if you see anything you'd like done.

That would be a custom BRS replicant
Regrind tanto, JT designs g10 slot scales, static knives Titanum anomalous liners, fox fire factory titanium Channel Spacers, armor black cerakote. Bout a $600 Bali as it sits. All work done by yours truly.

Couch, welcome back.
Benchmade is the bomb...!!!
The most common problem with quality knives (sheath, folding, lockblade...), is losing them...

What kind of knife could ya do me for around the US$100 mark? I'm more concerned with durability than style. Definitely something that won't rust if left out in the rain. I want a concealable blade, so something like a butterfly / switchblade / flick knife.
I'd need it shipped to the UK, but let me check the laws first. I imported an airsoft gun from Taiwan one time and it took a few weeks of letter writing for customs to release it to me.
I'm on holidays in the Canaries at the moment and am still trying to steady myself after the weirdest dream lastnight . . . I always have the most vivid dreams when I leave home. Plus I smoke cigarettes while I'm away.

I recomend heinnie.com if you wanna buy knives in europe atleast. Bought a couple from there back in the day. Very reliable company. Fast shipping and huge selection. And prices ok also. UK company . From knife manufacurers i can recomend spyderco, benchmade, cold steel, all very good quality and come from the box razor sharp, literally

I'm not in to those butterfly knives. But you do some pretty fucking good work there.
The kind of knives I carry are the $20-50 ones like my Smith and Wesson folding blade I got from Walmart. It holds an edge well, cuts well, fits my hand and if I break it or scratch it up, I don't really care, because it's cheap.

Yeah; great info/advice here...
In the kitchen, my knives are top of the line (or better; the best I can afford), but for EDC or outdoors use (except my skinning / butchering knives, but even those are not top quality...), it's better to buy on the reasonable range.... IMHO

I've got a mix...fixed blades run the gamut from Buck to ESEE to Extrema Ratio ( Extrema Ratio was a gift from some friends several decades ago).
Folders include a range from SOG to Kershaw to Schrade.
I like Benchmade, but my wallet has an aversion to them. If it was a working knife I could accept the price difference.
Edit: I do have a prototype fixed blade given to me by Jerry Busse that I'm proud of.Last edited by almostgone; 11-07-2022 at 08:58 AM.

Ahh...lunchtime.
This is a picture of the prototype knife given to me by Jerry Busse. If I recall correctly, it was before they developed the proprietary blend of steel ( INFI, if I recall correctly).
This was made out of a run of burnt out D-2 blanks. It isn't hard to sharpen, holds an edge well, and I will pretty much skin anything with be a heartbeat.
FWIW, the sharpening stone in the picture is older than me. It's a Norton medium oilstone and on the reverse is a hard Arkansas oilstone. Actually, I think the ceramic rod may be older than me as well.
I need to have a proper sheath made for it, preferably something that will allow me to carry the knife scout-style.Last edited by almostgone; 11-07-2022 at 03:40 PM.

If you run into any snags mounting your readout on your mill, holler, I may be able to offer a little input.
Usually, the instructions are pretty straight up. If you're trying to get it really close, you may have to check your displayed value compared to measuring a known value like a standard or gage block and then calculate a linear error correction.
For general purposes, you can often get away with a partial turn to get rid of backlash, then comparing the displayed value vs. "X" number of turns on your leadscrew multiplied by the distance traveled in one revolution.
That will be a fun project this winter when the weather is craptacular outside.Last edited by almostgone; 11-11-2022 at 09:22 AM.
