Stupid ankle...
Alright, so check out what I got for Xmas this year...a swollen ankle and a pair of crutches...
I was playing basketball, went up to block a shot, came down on this kid's foot and it just rolled, i heard (and felt) a loud-ass pop and it immediately swelled up. I went to the ER - no definitive acute fracture was the word from the ER docs. I see my family doc today, who will (i'm assuming) tell me nothing except that I should see a specialist to determine how much damage I've done. It's still swollen as all hell - 5 days later - and the back and outer sides of my right ankle are completely black and blue...
anyone have a similar injury? I'm curious to know what I might've done...i've been told there's some possible ligament/tendon damage, so knowing my luck, it'll be nice and serious...

that sucks bro... it sounds more like a bad sprain than a break... last time I had one of those it took forever to heal. (same deal, rolled off someones foot playing racquetball)
From what I understand when it comes to ankle injuries a break is better to get than a sprain in terms of recovery time. Really sorry you're busted up my man... stay off it as much as possible.

yeah probably a sprain. Got one two years ago from tennis. Took a year to feal 100%. I still played tennis a weak later. wrapped it up real tight with a ace bandage.
It always hurt like hell and swelled as big as the first time when I took the bandage off. Probably why it took so long to get better. My point is if you rap it real well you can still use it.

Thanks...here's the update. I see an orthopedic surgeon tomorrow to determine whether or not I need surgery - as it is, I more than likely have torn all of the ligaments extending from the ankle down to the bottom of the foot - as well as one major ligament extending from the ankle up into the distal portion of the lower leg. That is the big one apparently, and if it is indeed torn, I will more than likely need to have it surgically re-attached...oh well...i'll keep ya updated

I've sprained my left ankle twice, had a hairline fracture in my right ankle, and broke a metatarsal in my left foog, all from basketball. I honestly believe that there are more injuries in basketball than in any other sport. but, yeah just stay off of it man. Time and rest. Once it can get some mobility, get one of those sports bands and do excerises with them. they're strengthen back up evuentally

Alright, so here's the final (i think) verdict for anyone who cares. After talking to the surgeon and having him tell me about the possibility of putting a screw in my ankle and also re-attaching one of the ligaments, he did some more testing and another Xray and deemed that despite the severity of the "sprain" that nothing was really necessary. According to him, physical therapy is my only treatment necessary - i have a bunch of torn ligaments, but the major one is OK and the bones are inline, so no need to screw them back together.
this is a huge weight off my shoulders, as i was not looking forward to any surgery and extended recovery
as it stands, i'll be crutching it for another week or so, I'm supposed to walk as soon as I can put pressure on my foot without pain - then in a brace for 6 weeks - and after 3 months I "should" be OK to start lifting and running again. Bascially, it's all on me now. I don't need to follow up with a doc unless I'm in pain or feel it's necessary. Also, I have the option of doing physical therapy on my own (which he recommended) or going to a therapist...so we'll see how it goes...
so thanks for the support, i'm done feeling sorry for myself and am ready to start rehabbing...

had injury very like it blocked a shot and rolled my ankle so it curved inside my leg. outside of anke was ****ed swolled up to raquetball size in the matter of mintues and I was on crutches for 3 1/2 weeks wearing a semi cast with ACE wrapped around it. On my lower leg on the outside it turned black and blue along a line and my foot turned nasty colored all black later turning to yellow and was swollen for 2 weeks. Finnaly got back on it though it was horrible my left leg shrunk noticably usually the stronger ;leg but ever since my right is the foot i can jump better off of. May you heal quickly in the coming weeks!
