katanas are poorly engineered- horrible suspension, de-tuned motor, etc.. they are a bit cheaper- but for good reason..
i'm not going to say get this or get that- but if you are looking for a sport bike that you can "learn" on- i would suggest the sv.. it doesnt have the expensive plastic on it- so when you lay it down, it wont cost you an arm and leg.. its really responsive, good suspension, and just a fun bike to ride. plus its a bit cheaper than the gsxr, r6, r1, cbr, etc....
also- you might find this hard to understand right now- but if you are buying used, you'll find that most sv's are owned by either older or more experienced riders.. because they know the value and performance of the sv.. knowing this- you can find a reasonably priced sv that has probably been taken better care of... i.e. broken in properly, hasnt been riden on the rev limiter excessivly, and has had the recommended maintenance performed...
i know youre probably looking to find something fast and flashy looking- but as a first bike you might want to look at some of the things ive been saying.. i'm not recommending the sv because you are inexperienced- but for its economical reasons..
also- you'll more than likely find a better deal on any bike through a trader magazine rather than a dealer.. just do your homework or you'll get ripped either way..

    yeah,
I see what you are saying, the sv might be the way to go...I have been visiting this website a lot since last summer. www.svrider.com there are a lot of mods that can be done to the sv...i think it might be the smart choice....thanks a lot for your input!

My last bike was a Honda Valkyrie. At 5'-5 I was able to handle all 750 lbs and 1540cc. One thing I didn't see mentioned was learning how to counter steer. This is where most novices get into trouble. Counter steering is pushing in the direction you want to go. When you are in a decreasing radius turn you really need to dig the bike into the turn. Alot of novices panic and wind up off the road or drifting into oncoming traffic.

1st bike I ever rode was a Harley V Rod, last summer after I bought it. When it was delivered to the house, my friend showed me where the throttle, clutch, brakes, etc. were and in 3 minutes, I was doing 90 on a backroad! I got my license 2 weeks later and passed the first time out. I never took the course but maybe someday... it's good to learn and can get you discounted insurance.

    zx7,
why no katanna? i really dont like the look of the bike, but it was fairly new and in my price range? what about this one...00gsxr600, $5000?

I have a suzuki gsxr 600 40th anny edition...Im selling it now, but 600cc is the least I would go...and when you finally become an experienced rider...you'll be pissed cause all of your buds who ride 900cc and up are smokin ya.

It can't be that hard to ride....when I was 3, my dad bought me a brand new 1984 honda 3 wheeler....needless to say I couldn't reach the shift lever, but I was riding motorized while all the other kiddies had battery powered powerwheels.

Just don't get cocky when riding...especially sport bikes...the second you do....you die!!
