Mystery surrounds death of Ireland's strongest woman
SHOCK: Trish (38) may have had stroke.
Tuesday September 29 2009
Tributes have been paid to Ireland's strongest woman, Trish Porter, who died of a suspected stroke aged just 38.
Originally from Wexford, Trish was one of the most successful female strength athletes in Ireland and Britain.
Trish's heartbroken husband, Philip Linton, who was also her trainer, said that she died suddenly on Sunday.
"This is a massive shock," he said. "There was absolutely no sign of anything being wrong with Trish physically."
Trish had been living in Maghera, Co Derry, with her husband and her three children Ryan (11), Conor (2) and Kellie (14).
Philip, who trained Trish prior to her runner-up placing in the NABBA 2008 Miss Universe competition, described her as a lady who had a very large heart.
modest
He said: "Trish was always smiling. She was smiling every time I ever saw her.
"But she was a modest lady... she never believed how good she was.
"She was small in stature but big in heart. And she threw everything she had into every competition she entered."
Trish won Irish and British powerlifting titles, UK's strongest woman and was runner up in the NABBA 2008 Miss Universe.
In March last year, she won the Miss Northern Ireland Bodybuilding title.
And last October the athlete came second in the prestigious Mr and Mrs Universe body building event in Southport.
On a tribute site set up in her memory, friends have been posting their thoughts about the mum of three.
"A lovely woman with a warm heart," said one friend. "She would have helped anybody at our gym any way she could."
Another distraught friend said that Trish had passed away before the medics could get to her. "By the time an ambulance arrived she was gone," they said.
Trish, whose parents are John and Anna Cullen from New Ross, Wexford, represented Ireland at the World Body Building Championship.
When she was not training for competition, Trish worked as a restaurant manageress at Portglenone's Wild Duck Inn.
Management and owners of the establishment said that she would be sadly missed by all of the staff members.
In a statement, the firm said: "She loved life and was an ambassador for our company, a perfectionist at her job and widely known and respected by our regular customers and the surrounding community.
"She was more than an colleague, she was a friend. She was our Miss Wild Duck and certainly our Miss Universe."
The determined athlete lived in Northern Ireland for the past 15 years and her aim was to turn professional and her ambition is to be one of the three strongest women in the world.
