Operation next week, safe to take HRT meds and supplements?

    Hello all

I have an operation next week Wednesday, despite being normal weight for my height (12stone 6 - 6foot1) I have sleep apnea and have to wear CPAP mask etc. Ear nose throat clinic checked me out and are thus going to operate to remove my Adenoids and also inferior turbelence diathermy surgery (nasal).

    1) I am currently on 25mg Clomiphene eod, and about to start 0.25mg Arimidex 3 days a week (prescribed by trt specialist). And taking supplements such as Ashwagandha, Multi Vitamin, Vitamin D, L Cartnine, Zma, Calcium D Glucarate, Shilajit and Cialis. Are these safe to have on/near operation days? I will be under General Anaesthetic and may stay for 1 night.

Anyhow, I had to cut it out for 5 days before and I think 2 days after, evidently there is a possibility of it causing additional bleeding.

Depends a lot on the surgery/procedure - I did the opposite, I kicked the fish oil up - but, stopped all aspirin use - since my surgery/procedure carries a stroke risk - thinner blood, seems to work better for mine at least

Yours - I “think” you’ll b fine - but, I’m still far from being able to give true medical advise

I learned that phrase from all of the RN's in my neuro unit over my stay - All of them say the same exact thing. . . Kinda picked it up from there

Best person to talk to about it would be the Surgeon or one of his/her team as soon as you can.

They give you a piece of paper with all the stuff to avoid. For my epidural they told me avoid 420 , muscle relaxers and my blood thinners . I'd say if you're that worried call and ask . Theres always that small chance something happens in the operating room . If your dr doesn't know about it dont take it that week

You should have had a pre-op briefing during which they would have told you specifically what to take and what not to. Most of the no-nos are things that can thin the blood or promote bleeding, like aspirin and fish oil. As litigious as America is today I find it very suspicious that they did not give you specific instructions beforehand.

I personally know someone who didn't have his tonsils and adenoids removed until he was an adult. He experienced uncontrolled bleeding so they had to cauterize the wounds. That means they stuck the medical equivalent of a soldering iron into his throat and burned the bleeding closed. Also touched his lower lip with it and burned the hell out of his lip.

    His profile does say “England”.

BG is correct though, the things they have you stop taking are centered about preventing bleeding. That’s what the concern is and not eating beforehand, so you don’t asphyxiate on your vomit if they anesthesia doesn’t agree with you.

You don’t want the anesthesiologist to actually have to do something, he’ll be quite busy on his phone playing video games, trading stocks or texting his girlfriend (best job in the OR)
