am i the asshole?
alright, so tonight at bjj, i am rolling with the guy who i would say is the best at our school aside from the instructor. he is roughly 220lbs or so and a high blue belt. i am 190lbs and a hi***sh white belt. we are working on side mount escapes (bridge and flip over to double/single leg). so we go to work from that position and our instructor says to not put the hand under the head if you are the guy on top, as it makes that escape much more difficult, if not impossible as it traps your head from turning.
so i go on bottom at first, and he puts his hand under my head (as he was just told not to). and i just ignore it and start to work on removing his hand and preventing him from mounting. so a little while into it in we were stuck in a stalemate, he tells me to 'work on the technique we were just practicing'. i say, well its hard to do with your arm under my head. he laughs and rolls his eyes like i am being a wimp about it, but moves his arm. by this time it is time to switch.
so i go on top and keep my arm over his body and not under his head, as we were told to do. so he tries the technique, and i take mount, so i stop and reset, like we were supposed to. he tells me to keep goign until i submit him. so we start again and end up rolling for a while without anyone gaining dominant position, and he stops and says, 'alright, i got out of it anyways'. the next time, i sprawled when he rolled to double leg and i anaconda choked him which i think pissed him off, because then the next time he caught me in a triangle, but my other arm was still in giving my just enough room to breath. instead of reestablishing his guard or going for an armbar instead, he just starts cranking on his leg and pulling my arm across. i clearly wasn't going to tap because he didnt' ahve the submission, but he clearly wanted to power his way into a tap.
so that kind of pissed me off, but whatever, so we keep going, and he gets me with a shin-across the neck/arm across my other side of the next choke/neck crank, which he yanked on until my neck popped a few times again. again, whatever, he is strong and probably didnt' know his own strength. i said something about my neck popping, and he just kind of laughed and got ready to go again. this time, he gets side control and starts to wrap his belt around my neck, which i ask him what he is doing, thinking it was illegal to do. to which he tells me he is allowed to choke me with whatever he wants and that it is completely legal. after i questioned the legality of it, he said, 'whatever man' and just stops trying, and at this point, i stop trying because i have no desire to get hurt and im sick of his attitude.
practice is over and he tries to explain how what he did was legal, which i still dont think it is. but needless to say i am not happy. i've never felt like i was being a bitch when i have rolled. i've gotten frustrated, but i feel like he was going about training the complete wrong way in that he was just trying to beat my ass, whereas i, if i am the stronger opponent, which i usually am, try not to use strength and go only on technique.
am i wrong here, or was he being a dick about it?

sounds like he was trying to be pretty over bearing. like possibly a power trip. i don't blame you for feeling like that, i'm sure many guys would have lost there tempers. i would just roll with somebody else next time and from here on out. **** that dude... he's not worth your worries.
although... i would check the legality on that, cause i'm pretty sure ur not allowed to do that.

i can't imagine that choking with your belt is allowed, and no you are not being a dick - this guy was.

it's not allowed... you can use any part of your gi and there gi to point...
p.s. What kind of instructor lets all that go on during basic instruction...i'd have made you both leave for the day.

distracting the class...basically sparing during instruction
disrespectful.

no, im sorry, maybe i was unclear. we were supposed to be sparring. he was just sparring under his own plan and not how we're supposed to. we were supposed to start in side mount, allowing the other guy's head free so he could attempt to roll to his belly. then if someone either got out or took mount, we were supposed to reset. he did neither and only reset when he wanted to.

I understand what you mean...Sounds to me this guy is a proper dick! I'd have put him out cold given the anaconda choke positioning then explain to the main instructor wat a dick the guy was in popping your neck and his attitude toward you ;-)

I don't really wanna comment on what i think, it is to early in the morning for a cussing tirade.
Basically he is so proud of being a blue belt (a very low rank) and thinks he is a bad ass, why not ask him to spar for real without the Gi etc and then take his head off.***No source checks!!!***

well good, at least it sounds like everyone agrees with me. since i am stronger than most, i try to not give my all, and work on technique. if i dont have a submission completely (like his triangle), i let it go and work to get something else rather than trying to pop someone's head off. i guess he and i just have completely different training attitudes, whereas. o, and i just realized that the one submission where it felt like he was cranking my neck forward was a gogoplata. i've never seen one of these in person, nor have i been tapped to one before, so that was a fun new experience.

Ok, let's keep this simple.
Do not train with him anymore, easy fix.
And if your ego gets the best of you when he starts calling you a pussy or whatever for not rolling with him, roll with him and go 100% balls to the wall on him. (IE: Knee in throat, elbows in thighs when passing guard.)***No source checks!!!***

yeah, he was the dick in that situation, and like stated above, dont roll with him again especially if you think it will present another problem.

that guy is the asshole. that was a time to learn/practice, not competition. i hate when people take liberties, especially really pointless ones like that.
but, some daft mo fo's do these things, hell, even with PRO WRESTLING training lol. they will put a submission hold on you, which is supposed to hurt alittle, but not like when you put them on for real. anywho, they will really crank on the hold. my old trainer used to use me as his dummy when we had classes, and everytime, you could bet your house, he would take liberties with me.
