Meet Freddie Roach

It was early afternoon of Saturday, August 18, 2007, I found myself pushing my way through dozens of Manny Pacquiao fans as I made my way into the spanking new RWS Boxing Gym. Pacquiao was there, atop the ring doing some warm up exercise. Intently observing were Filipino trainer Buboy Fernandez and two time trainer of the year awardee Freddie Roach.

So this is the fabled Freddie, I said to myself. I was planning to get an interview with Pacquiao, but it was just impossible—the situation in the gym is not just conducive. Then I got the chance to go near where Freddie was situated. I introduced myself and requested for an interview with him next day, lunchtime at the lobby of WATERFRONT HOTEL in Lahug, Cebu.

It was almost 2pm when I finally saw Freddie coming from the outside of the hotel. Freddie was apparently coming from the mall where he got a big shock.

” I found out I am popular here” said Freddie with a smile. “In the mall where I took a walk people are coming up to talk to me. I got autograph requests, and requests to have my picture taken with them. I didn’t mind obliging their requests. In fact I enjoyed it! “
