Guess who just got a belt promotion??!?!

Well, I was getting a little bitter that I knew all the moves and was even better than some blue belts andheld my own wit hthe rest of them even back in June but I didn't get promoted. I kept training though with a little less intensity as things have conspired against my training.

Well, it turns out that since the academy ahs been getting so big recently they decided to hold all belt promotions and do a semi-annual belt promotion ceremony all official-like and all at once instead of onesy-twosey. So I finally got my blue belt and was very happy about it. I rolled with a newly promoted Brown belt today and he commented on my skill and understanding of the technique was above a "beginner" blue belt and am progressing well.

    YAY ME!!!

Thanks bro. I have trained the last 2 days in a row 2x yesterday) and am training 2x today as well. I, of course, didn't quite make it into the office the last two days either.. but hey; Training is SOO much more fun!!

I used to train like 12x EW but then I had to go back to work (following back injury, non GJJ related) and the work causes me enough pain/issues that I frequently miss classes I used to attend. I am missing more and more work and geting in more classes now I think I'll be medically retiring soon and I'll just train and work out full time so I can work on getting my health up to a reasonably acceptable level because for now, I am still all too frequently in a good deal of pain. I just work through it for work/training and then pay for it when I'm done.. take a handfull of pain killers and muscle relaxers and lay down for 3-5 hours afterwards

Pay no attention to the time it takes to get "promoted" etc.. A belt only holds your pants up, it cant do anything for you. The techniques are in your mind.

So congrats on your promotion, keep training hard.

yeah, I know but at the same time, I knew I was more than capable and competent enough to deserve it. I wasn't really bitter about it per se but more slightly botherd about why they were holding back when I could stalemate or beat some bluebelts.

Anyway... I appreciate thepositive thoguhts and congrats and such. I appreciate it guys.

I know what you mean. It took me 4 years to get my blue and i was hanging pretty well with purples at that stage, mind you I usually outweighed them by a fair bit (290lbs). Got my purple about 3 months ago. I know that they say a belt just holds up the pants, but I also know that a belt promotion in bjj takes a long time and lots of hard work. It is also one of the rare martial arts styles that belt level is indicative of your skill level. You don't see many 8 year old black belts in BJJ as you often see in taekwondo, karate etc etc. Congratulations on your belt promotion mate.

You are correct to an extent, BJJ has always been a martial art where your "rank" was indicative of your skill level etc..

There of course have been an influx of schools and teachers who promote to keep their students happy and paying for classes. Sad But True!

I rolled with some Brown Belts as a Blue Belt and gave them hell and even tapped one.

I think it is also important for a person studying Jiu-Jitsu to not only be able to pull of a move but to understand the idea behind it. I always liked that about Rickson's teaching style. He not only wanted you to physically know how to utilize your Jiu-Jitsu, he wanted you to mentally understand why this move works here versus another situation.

so very true! But it is nice to have recognition for all the work you have put in. Plus too the first thing guys always ask me is what belt are you? How many stripes? I know it doesnt matter what belt you are really, but i still want to get belted sooner than later.
