Martial Arts Recommendations.
I have been wanting to get into a form of martial arts for some time now but would like some recommendations for good starter classes. I am in good shape 6 foot 185lbs usually around 12-14 % BF. my only restrictions at the moment would be my knee injury so I would like to start in more hand to hand type classes till I get my knee strength back to normal.
Thanks
Nick

the best thing to do is start mma training but will be bad for your knee, but all martial arts is going 2 b roughly the same because alot of it is down to footwork and all your power has to come from th legs and hips
maybe just start doing a little bag/pad work in boxing(still bad for ur knee tho lol)

uhhh... "MMA training" bad idea... you go to a school that "trains mma" and you are usually just getting a hack who isn't that good at stand up or ground. Depends what you are wanting to do... i say if you want good martial art for stand up ... go muay thai. I don't know how bad your knee is , but it's pretty great.
and of course if you want ground ...bjj....
but there are alot of great fighting martial arts out there to chooose from...just stay away from tkd

iv trained at an mma school for over a year now and the instructors are far from hacks,if you find a real mma school they will have more then one instructor for each discipline
we have 2 of the best thai boxing coachs and 1 world class boxing coach for stand up we have 3 black belts in bjj (1 under the gracies, and one of the thai coachs has his bjj black belt) we have a full time wrestling coach who trains wrestling only 5 x days a week in his on school and 3 in ours,he also holds qualifications in personal training?strength and conditioning as does one of the otha instructors
if your looking for a great workout and a mixed batch of skills its the best thing to do,just dont find a school that is run by a hack lol theres 100s out there that do it right
where are you from?
excuse the spelling lolLast edited by jonny101; 03-17-2008 at 11:18 AM.

Man I take offense to the MMA statement ya made zimmy. I train at FLO here in IL (flomma.com) and we have nothing but top notch guys fro the UFC and other org's. Dino was Freddie Roaches Ast. "Comprido is a 7 Time World BJJ champ and now we also have Christian Uflacker a Gracie BJJ black belt help out our BJJ program as well. I've had a couple AM MMA fights and get to traver with the guys for their fights. Gimps all ya have to do is have the drive and will to put in the work. Learn the small stuff and make them yours. Once ya can do that pick something else up.

all martial arts requires footwork. whether its just a simple side-step, or a roundhouse kick.
imo, for basics try muay thai or kickboxing.. then when shift to MMA. inform the instructor of past / present injuries, and health issues that you may have.

I think Zimmy was just referring to all of the gyms that have opened up due to the popularity of MMA recently.

I train at an mma school mostly ju jitsu if i am spelling it rite, it realy helps you ground tech and boxing from a boxing instuctor private i will say this every instructor is diffrent and jujitsue instructor looks like a ****en lame but he is ****en leathal on higher level he broke a dude arm in a kage fight not to long ago moy tie kick boxer instructor has a diffrent aproach and my boxing instructor has a hole other theiry but the noledge is usefull no mater what combat skills over an untrain street fighter is so much better i have been to prison and let me tell you that dont mean shit when you go against a trained fighter the first few weaks i got my ass handed to me like no tommorow skill is the key and not size.
