Jeff Monson talks about his upcoming fight with Chase Gormley
I will be in Aruba for this event and am more excited about the tournament than this fight but this Gormley dude may end up being a tough match for Monson???
Jeff "The Snowman" Monson interview on:
His recent victory over Roy "Big Country" Nelson and
the upcoming Vengeance Fighting Championships "Proving Grounds"
tournament
in Aruba
Vengeance- First of all, congratulations on your recent victory over Roy
Nelson.
Monson: Thanks.
Vengeance: Roy is a guy that if someone didn't know how solid he was, they
might underestimate him by appearance alone even though he was the IFL
Heavyweight champ. Did you underestimate him or did you go into the fight
knowing what you were dealing with?
Monson:i knew he was tough. we were really worried about this fight. roy is a hard striker, extremely good grappler and also difficult to take down. so we weren't seeing having the distinct advantage in any position.
Vengeance: Roy is an unorthodoxed fighter who throws heavy hands and is also a
black belt in jui jitsu. Were you able to stick with your game plan throughout
the fight or did you have to adjust due to his style?
Monson:i had to adjust. the plan was to take him down and work him over on the ground. i ended up not being on top once during the fight so it ended up mainly being standup which favored him.
Vengeance: You have beaten a list of MMA legends in the past year alone (Mark
Kerr, Ricco Rodriguez and Roy Nelson). Do you feel like you are at the top of
your game?
Monson:i feel like i am doing well. i am always looking to improve and i think i will continue to get better and better. i have an open mind and great instructors at att so i am constantly being pushed to improve.
Vengeance: What are your thoughts on MMA finally having a neutral organization
like WAMMA to rank the top fighters in the world?
Monson:its great to see. i have always wanted to go to aruba and now i get to fight there so its really exciting. the tournament style will be great for the fans and mma as well.
Vengeance: How do you feel about your upcoming fight on June 6th with
undefeated newcomer, Chase Gormley (6-0)?
Monson: he's a tough guy from what i've seen. i think he is going to be over his head with me though. but he has nothing to lose and i am taking the fight very serious so i will train hard for him. i am looking for an exciting match.
Vengeance: You are billed as the superfight on the Vengeance Fighting
Championships "Proving Grounds" card in Aruba against Gormley. What
do you think about the idea of bringing back the eight man tournament that
Vengeance is doing the same night with 8 men that won`t even know who they are
fighting till the press conference the day before?
Monson:that is old school and i love it. this is going back to the beginning and what mma was meant to be. truely the guy who wins that tournament has got something to be proud of.
Vengeance: How do you feel about the caliber of fighters in the tournament and
if you had to predict a winner, who would it be?
Monson:to be honest i think it will come down to toughness and not necessarily the most talented of the bunch. so in that way i really can't predict a winner.
Vengeance: Jeff, thank you for your time and we can't wait to see you
fight in Aruba along with the "Proving Grounds" tournament. One last
question, what is your prediction on your fight?
Monson:thanks for having me. i think my fight will not go very long and it will be defiantely exciting for the fans.
Vengeance: Thanks again Jeff and for all the MMA fans--go to vengeancefc.com
