The more I learn about nutrition....

I used to think bodybuilding nutrition was really complex.... Like all the little details make the difference...

    Eat every two hours....

    Eat only whole natural foods...

Any processed food will just be 'bad' and make you fat....

I have to avoid 'bad' foods because they just don't work....

    Meal timing was highly important...

Breakfast was really important and you have to consume it or your literally starving the muscle....

You should limit whey protein as much as possible as whole foods are 'better'.....

Carbs cannot be consumed before bed as they will turn into fat......

You get the idea guys.... All of which is pretty much false or at least the difference is not worth worrying about overall...

Over the years I have learnt new things but I'd say that over the past year I have really been interested in learning about nutrition and training and the science behind it...

I have spent countless hours reading and watching YouTube videos to learn more.... I have basically changed my though process completely towards everything 'bodybuilding'.... Trying to forget everything I 'know' and relearn from the start based on sound scientific data rather than broscience....

The more I learn about nutrition the more I realise it is not complexed at all..... The metabolic stuff is very complexed but the overall picture that we can actually effect (meal frequency, meal size, meal timing, food choices etc...) is really basic..... The changes that we can make like the points above have very little (if any) consequence on overall metabolism....

I find it funny that the more I know the less I need to know.... I hope this makes sense...

So the take home message from this is to stop worrying about all the finer details and start thinking more about the bigger picture..... Macronutrient breakdown, overall macronutrient intake, micronutrient intake, fiber intake (although these last two may not make a massive difference to your physiques they are important)....

I recommend that everyone re-learns what they think they know..... Be willing to move with the times, don't be a sheep.... If someone makes a statement then ask they WHY.... Don't believe anything you read in a magazine or forum and question everything and find out the truth for yourself.... Take information on board but don't take it as fact or optimal... Do your own research and then make a decision...

I have learnt a lot from many people but I'd say a great start is to subscribe to the following YouTube channels.... Watching videos is a great way to kill time and motivate yourself too...

Flexforall2 - this is Matt ogus' channel... He is a natural bodybuilder and a really good guy.... He will probably win his pro card this year.....

Biolayne - layne nortons channel.... If you don't know who layne is then shame on you, lol, just kidding.... Layne is a pro natural bodybuilder and powerlifter... He has a PhD in nutritional science or something like that and has done specific bodybuilding research himself.... Great guy... One of the best in the industry by fat...

Team3DMJ - ok, team3DMJ are a team of natural bodybuilding prep coaches.... Eric Helms, Alberto Nunez, Jeff Alberts and brad loomis, all of which are natural pros... However Eric Helms is the guy who I have watched a lot of videos of... Really good guy.... Search for Eric helms Q&A on YouTube for some great info....

Great post Base, and I agree on just about all points. The deeper I delve into things, and put more time under my belt, I too find that less can be more. All the years I spent worrying about minute details (that would really have had little to no effect on my goals seeing as I was 15% plus bodyfat) could have been better spent actually DOING.

I will comment further tomorrow when I'm back I front of a PC, but you and I are on the same page.

Agreed, I've been questioning broscience for a long time, I've been put on blast and ganged up on at times on this website for questioning the laws of broscience.
Ive learned to deal with facts, not theories (broscience). And btw to all that care, I still eat bread and drink milk (don't get emotional about it folks)

    Good post base.

Great post man! I agree 100% and pretty much went thru the same process over the past 6-12 months.
All 3 YouTube channels you listed are amongst my favs. Maybe I should add Jason / icecreamfitness to the List of recommendations. Recently hes become my favorite actually, really good stuff on there, no bs.

    Tell you what Base,

Many of the things I thought I knew?
Well, as we all know here on the board, we get challanged all the time. This is a healthy thing, since now I realize many of the things I thought I knew, weren't necessarily true. Like eating every two hours helps improve metabilism.

It's too bad. I wish it were true. I still eat frequently. Just no expectations of improving metabolism because of it.

I kind of wish all the bro stuff I learnt was true too.... I felt like a real genius in my bro'ish ways lol....

I love the debates here or anywhere.... Debating anything like this is fun for me....

We used to do a thing at school where they would split the classroom.... Then a topic would be raised and a debate started.... Whatever side of the room you had to take that side of the debate even if you actually agreed with the other side (sounds like they were training us to be politicians)... Anyway, it was really fun and I still enjoy doing it now.... As adults we can have a good debate and relevant info is raised on both sides.... It doesn't matter who is right or wrong, all that matters is that everyone is open and willing to take in information and then make an educated decision based on what evidence has been presented by all sides....

However some people are just incapable of doing this.... They simply will not change there mind and because it works for them it must mean its right (or optimal, which is what I'm always looking for)....

It's not always easy for me to admit I'm wrong when I thought I was 100% right before.....

the other one I thought I had right was the "glycemic window" post workout. Shit, I read books, looked up authoratative references, thought I really knew my shit. then i was challanged. I resisted at first (of course, look at all the work i did making sure I was "right") So then I looked at the counter argument, and it looked just as convincing.

it's funny how you can have two different studies, with two counter conclusions, and each one concludes that the opposing side is wrong, and their side is right.

You have to be careful when reading studies or just abstracts....

Think about it.... You go looking for info that supports what you think is correct... Of corse your going to find it lol.... Research can be done with set peramiters and effect the outcome.... Your better off IMO listening to what people have to say about scientific data who actually are in the know... Layne norton springs to mind....

There is a chance I could go and find data (well an abstract at least (which means nothing BTW)) to support most theory's.... You have to look deeper into the data to really understand the outcome.... As layne norton said in one of his videos, he had read an abstract which suggested the outcome was on thing and then after reading the data himself realised that that wasn't what they found out at all....

    Good thread base

I especially like what you said up above, where you say if you want to find the 'right' answer, you'll find it every time

TR- what was the diet trend back when you had to hunt dinosaurs and move around?

Good post Base. You know, to the chagrin of the Nutrition guys, I've never counted a calorie, carb, gram of protein or anything, ever. I never saw the point and always just listened to my body and made changes from internal / external feedback. Bodybuilding and this lifestyle is supposed to be fun and taking it to that level (to me) would take the fun right out of it. And that includes my competitive days.

I absolutely love this lifestyle of eating healthy and making changes to my physique, even at my "old" age compared to most here. Can't think of a reason to change anything at this point. I look at some of the guys I know who do nothing physically and it never fails to make me realize how right my choice has been.

    My .02 anyway!
