Lil' Help Please...bit Scared
Please, any advice, experiences, opinions, etc.
I went to a new doc today (uro) to try and move from gel to shots. Got a freekin big ole finger f)*k of a rectal exam. Boy was pretty frickin thorough. Had one done with 1st endo and she said was smooth, small, no lumps, nuthin. Pretty much gave me my props on havin a nice prostate. So, compared to today's visit it was totally diff. Still actually feel the shit...I don't know maybe should be postin in the fu_*(n female forum and callin SVU or somethin...LOL
NEway...he said he felt something that needs checkin (biopsy in a couple weeks) He said it might just be calcification or slight enlarge from starting hormones (androgel ) but needs to make sure no cancer...WTF?
Think it's possible that my 1st endo wasn't very thorough...I mean are these exams supposed to hurt?
I'm even thinking of getting a 2nd opinion on if the biopsy is necessary for some reason.
Wasn't even real comfortable with the overall visit, either. Length of time waiting vs. time with me and or concern of symptoms. I mean he checked me out pretty thorough and all...testes, checkin for lumps, etc. Said he didn't have a prob writing me scripts but needs to check prostate better. I know I'm not gonna forget about it, but just wondering about the 2 exams and their differences.
Plus a bit worried...
I don't know fellas...just any FB is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

By all means definitely get a second opinion. Some doctors are more careful and more knowledgeable about specific areas than other doctors.
I went to one doctor to try and get an HRT prescription and he is really thorough. He is in the process of running all kinds of tests. He is taking the time to put together the ideal program and PCT specifically designed for me.
A friend of mine went to a different doctor and just after running the following he was prescribed androgel :
Free and Total Testosterone
Estradiol
Prolactin
Progesterone
IGF1
The doctor I went to ran those tests as well, but he also ran the following:
Comp Metabolic Panel
Lipid Panel
CBC w/ Diff and Plt
PSA for prostate
Thyroid Cascade Profile
He says that the additional tests that he ran are necessary to determine if it is safe for a patient to be taking test based on their prostate, liver, thyroid, and cholesterol levels.

No, I didn't get a rec exam. My doctor ran a blood test to check my prostate. The test is called (PSA) prostate-specific antigen and can be done along side any other blood test.
Perhaps your doctor thought that you were really hot and just did this to try and get you off. Just Kidding. Was it a male or female doctor?
It sounds like you got the ol' DRE (digital rectal exam). The term 'digital' refers to a digit, as in a finger, there is absolutely nothing at all electronic about that test. They just check to see if there are any lumps or sensitivity in the prostate area.
I have never had that sort of test done. I bet it would hurt.
I doubt it would be anything like what was in the 2000' movie "Road Trip" where that hot nurse got Stifler off at the sperm bank by massaging his prostate in this manner. Remember that scene?Last edited by cmax; 06-08-2006 at 07:46 PM.

Don't worry about it so much. The DRE is a relatively standard procedure. He was just physically checking your prostate rather than solely relying on the blood test. Some doctors are more concerned about prescribing test to men without being confident on the condition of their prostate while others don't seem to care nearly as much.
Urologists regularly perform this on millions of patients every year. Most frequently on older men. How old are you?
Did you doctor say if he noticed anything specific when he did the exam?

DRE doesnt have to hurt but it is uncomfortable as hell, my doc found a lump but PSA was low and he did an ultrasound on it, they stick something up your ass and look at it, it turned out to be calcification from previous infection. ultrasound is much less painful than biopsy.

that's right..he did mention ultrasound....maybe that's what we are doing....i know he mentioned that...i guess i was just FREAKED out that it wasn't nything like the 1st exam...then him saying he felt something....he said it might just be calcification....so what's up with that (calcification) just goes away or just doesn't mean a thing...and biopsy is painful? i gotta call tommorrow to make sure....i might not even go right back to that doc...might get a 2nd opinion...this time from a skinny fem doc....He did say that not to worry that my age is rare for anything serious (37)..but he did add he had a rare case at 36...that didn't help any....i don't think he would order a ultrasound or biopsy or whatever just to make a few more $$$$....that ever cross anybodies minds?

Hope things work out for you. Good to find out. Cancer feeds on red blood cells and this can be prevented. Try not to stress over this.

Man ultra sound is the next step before any kind of biopsy, make sure you get one, insist on it. My Prostate is enlarged and had some calcification, they can see a lot from the ultra sound. Did they do a blood test for PSA, thats Prostate Specific Antigens, that is the main way they can tell if you have any kind of Prostate cancer. Biopsoy is absolutely the last resort. How old are you by the way ?

thanks kale...i'm 37...i think he set it up to do the ultrasound and biopsy at the same time....with the ultrasound device just helping find the area to scrape....i'm going to call when they open and make sure...the paper works says "preparation for ultrasound and biopsy" ...directions say to do a fleet enema 2 hours before and take the antibiotic we provided...and it talks about what to expect from the procedure like blood in urine, semen, stool...

Jpkman rest assured you are going to be fine. I talked to my girlfriend about this "who is a doctor"......and she said in today's world of lawsuits it's better for them to cover there ass. In other words better safe then sorry. At least you know your doc is covering all bases. I understand your point it would scare the shit out of me too. But again they are just doing there job! Keep us posted!!

Oh, yeah, sorry, PSA was done after 1st visit with endo...b4 going on androgel ...it was fine (low)..0.3
but the uro with the big fingers felt something....saying it could be calcification but need a biopsy to be sure....i asked if a ultrasound would possibly rule out needing a biopsy...like kale said... his doc could tell it was just calcification from the ultrasound...but my doc says no....that won't rule out anything...just tells you once again that there is something there...my next step..i have a appt on Thurs. back to the original endo...gonna ask her to switch me to the shots instead of the gel cause it might get on my kids..and then ask her to use her slim little finger to double check....i feel like an a$s whore asking for all these finger fu#$s....man, I thought i was almost there...i was doing pretty good with the 10mg of androgel...but my script was only for 5mg...so I'll be runnin out soon....and my first endo was wanting me to be patient for maybe a year on the 5mg even when my total test went down on the 5mg dose to 140 from 200+
thanks
