Thyroid and Body Temperature
Before I began TRT under a doctor's supervision, I had bloodwork done which indicated low Free T, and low Free T3, though neither were outside of the range from the Labs:
JUNE 2012 (Before TRT)
FREE T - 48.6 (range 15.6-146 pmol/L)
E2 - 88 (range 40-161 pmol/L)
TSH - 1.14 (0.35-4.94 mlU/L)
FREE T4 - 12 (range 8-15 pmol/L)
FREE T3 - 3.9 (range 3.8-6.0 pmol/L)
My doc put me on TRT, but wasn't too concerned about my low T3. I have done enough research now to realize that my low T3 may indicate a Thyroid condition, and may explain the symptoms that made me go to the doctor in the first place!
Although latest bloodwork indicates my T3 is higher, I am not losing any fat (in fact I have gained a few pounds since beginning TRT -- but maybe it is water and muscle) and here is the kicker: my body temperature is never above 36 degrees (c)! Never! I take it every day, and it is usually around 35.2-35.8!
As I say, my doc doesn't seem concerned with my thyroid, or my body temperature, should I be?Last edited by junk2222yard; 10-25-2012 at 07:50 AM. Reason: typo

Hi, I will give you my input, i cant say about the free t3 range and results, but i do know that when i was using t3 AND clen my body were about the temperatures you stated for yourself, the body regulates its own temperature very well, i dont think you should be worried, maybe a change in diet would do the trick.

Yes, you should be very concerned. Your FT3 assay is in the tank.
Most Doc's are not trained well when it comes to Thyroid conditions.
FT3 is the bio-available form of the hormone Thyroxine which is what you body uses.
As you know, many of the same symptoms of Hypothyroidism are the same as Hypogonadism.
In fact, your low Testosterone levels may be due to your Thyroid as Hypothyroidism can/will cause Hypogonadism.'
You need RT3 and Thyroid Antibodies tested now. You have good FT4 but are poorly converting to the much needed T3 and if your Thyroid antibodies are high this would explain much.
You need to find a Thyroid specialist as well...don't rely on this Doc.

Well one thing this doc is often good for is listening to me and *usually* giving me what I want. Because of the results above (and me prodding), he did test me for Thyroid Antibodies. They came back negative. (However, in the Lab Results it just says "Negative" -- it does not show what was tested exactly and what the real numbers were.)
As for Reverse T3, it does not exist in Canada. My doc said this, and I was suspicious, so I discussed it at the Lab itself. (CAML). They said it used to take 30 days to get, but they dropped it in the past few years so I can't get it at all.
Anyway, I did get retested by my doc, and the results are:
SEPT 2012 (5 weeks into TRT)
Thyroid Antibodies: Negative
Free T3 - 5.0 (range 3.8-6.0 pmol/L)
Free T4: 11 (range 8-15 pmol/L)
TSH: Not tested (clerical error)
As I say, even though my Free T3 is higher, my body temp remains quite low. There is a body of thought that says low body temp = low metabolism/thyroid issues, but I don't know if this is quackery or not?Last edited by junk2222yard; 10-25-2012 at 01:32 PM. Reason: typo

Thanks for the responses. I thought my new Thyroid numbers looked ok, but I wasn't sure. But my low body temperature is still worrying me. It seems to me that with a low body temperature, my metabolism has to work that much less to maintain the low temp, so I can't burn the calories that I take in, and get fatter. My diet is pretty good, and I work out with weights 3-4 times a week, and get around town on a bike. It just doesn't add up that I am as fat as I am, so I am looking for reasons? As I have said in my intro (I can't ink to it because I have < 50 posts), sudden weight gain and strength loss (all the while working out and mantaining the same diet) is what got me looking into testosterone and thyroid in the first place.
