Poll: Do you take Saw Palmetto
Do you take daily Saw Palmetto? If no, and you have a reason, what is it?
If yes, how much do you take? How often? Why do you take it?

I take it to control BPH. I take 2 doses daily, each of 160mg.
I have done a lot of reading on this site and elsewhere and trying to determine if it is a help or hindrance to my HRT.

I'm 35 and I've never had my prostate milked.... at least not outside of the "normal" methods my girlfriend handles at least 3 times a week, lol
As far as what you've read.... what exactly have you been reading and where are you doing your research?
-
No.
Never saw convincing evidence that it is good and free of long term side effects. I generally have a low opinion on the supplement industry in the first place nowadays though!

As educated as they are, your urologists are unknowingly biased! Since the "SAW" is not recognized by the FDA, nor promoted by a giant pharmacutical, then these urologists are not trained and probably do not consider the benefits of the saw.
For example, MSM works wonders on my knees, and many other members here as well. But when I go to see my doctor to discuss MSM, as beneficial as MSM is, a majority of doctors know NOTHING of MSM. Why? Because not recognized as such by the FDA and not promoted by giant pharmaceuticals.
Listen to your urologists when they discuss what they were trained to discuss. When it comes to things slightly outside their lane, sometimes it's prudent to take your education into your own hands.
Here's some data. The saw does help with prostate health, dispite what your urologists say....
The fruits of the saw palmetto are highly enriched with fatty acids and phytosterols, and extracts of the fruits have been the subject of intensive research for the symptomatic treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This extract is also commonly used for other medical conditions, such as baldness,[4] polycystic ovarian syndrome, and other hyperandrogen conditions, though research on such uses is preliminary.
Numerous meta-analyses of clinical trials S. repens extract in the treatment of BPH have found it safe and effective for mild-to-moderate BPH compared to placebo, finasteride, and tamsulosin[5][6] Two larger trials found the extract no different from placebo.[7][8] An updated meta-analysis including these trials found that saw palmetto extract "was not more effective than placebo for treatment of hyperplasia but following two million U.S. who use saw palmetto, urinary problems are greatly reduced.[9] However, saw palmetto extract was comparable to tamsulosin and finasteride in this meta-analysis. Longer-term (2 years; most clinical trials have been 1 year) open studies suggest that saw palmetto reduces the risk of men with BPH ultimately needing to have surgery.[10]

Plain language summary
Serenoa repens, an herbal medicine, provides mild to moderate improvement in urinary symptoms and flow measures for men with enlarged prostate glands (benign prostatic hyperplasia).
An enlarged prostate gland, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), can interfere with urination, increasing the frequency and urge, or cause problems emptying the bladder. Surgery and drugs can be used to try to treat BPH. However, using herbal medicines to try to relieve BPH symptoms is common. Serenoa repens is a popular herbal medicine for BPH. The review found that Serenoa repens was well tolerated, providing mild to moderate improvement in urinary symptoms and flow measures. These improvements were comparable to those seen in men taking a prescription drug, finasteride, for BPH. Research into long-term effects of Serenoa repens is needed.

Updated meta-analysis of clinical trials of Serenoa repens extract in the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/1...al+maintenance
OBJECTIVES
To determine, by analysing all available clinical trial data, the clinical efficacy against placebo of an extract from the fruit of the American dwarf palm tree, Serenoa repens (Permixon®, Pierre Fabre Médicament, Castres, France), as there is controversy about the use of phytotherapeutic agents in men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) suggestive of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
METHODS
All clinical trial data published on Permixon, comprising 14 randomized clinical trials and three open-label trials, involving 4280 patients, were analysed. These trials were of different size (22–1100 patients) and duration (21–720 days). The peak urinary flow rate and nocturia were the two common endpoints. The statistical analysis was based on a random-effects meta-analysis.
RESULTS
Permixon was associated with a mean (sem) reduction in the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) of 4.78 (0.41). The mean placebo effect on peak urinary flow rate was an increase of 1.20 (0.49) mL/s. The estimated effect of Permixon was a further increase of 1.02 (0.50) mL/s (P = 0.042). Placebo was associated with a reduction in the mean number of nocturnal voids of 0.63 (0.14); there was a further reduction attributable to Permixon of 0.38 (0.07) (P < 0.001). There was some heterogeneity among the studies for nocturia; one over 2 years involving 396 patients and showing no difference between placebo and Permixon had a large effect on the results.
CONCLUSIONS
This meta-analysis of all available published trials of Permixon for treating men with BPH showed a significant improvement in peak flow rate and reduction in nocturia above placebo, and a 5-point reduction in the IPSS.

In conjunction with Saw Palmetto, do any of these other supplements do as good of a job (or better), like the one Joe Theismann promotes?
Got to say, I've noticed my frequency for pssing has increased noticeably as I got older. PSA has been fine, and my female doc fingers me just right , but says all is fine.
