According to internet.
Penile ultrasound is a non-invasive way to help diagnose the specific cause of a man's erectile dysfunction (ED). A natural compound is injected into the penis that causes an erection, and the ultrasound registers blood flow, signs of vascular illness, and any scarring. This helps your doctor figure out if your ED is caused by a physical condition such as cardiovascular illness. It can be very useful for young men whose ED was caused by an accident or trauma, to determine whether surgery would be beneficial. It is sometimes used in men for whom drugs for ED aren't working well, to help determine why.

My Aetna insurance won't cover anything ED related or male hormone related until penal ultrasound, penal ED injections and changes in blood flow confirmed by ultrasound (Doppler) etc
Just fyi

It's weird isn't it. According to the doctor, it's part of his protocol.

In lamest terms, it pretty much uses high frequency sound waves to image blood vessels and tissues in the penis to diagnose ED caused by a medical condition that restricts blood flow to the penis needed for an erection. The ultrasound scan can show whether blood vessels have become leaky or are narrowed because of vascular issues such as heart and vessel diseases, as well as whether there is hardened scar tissue in the penis that can interfere with an erection.
