my vitamin D journey
Just thought some of you all might like to see this....
Back in July of 2012, my vitamin D total came in at 24ng/ml out of a range of 30-100.
I started taking 5000ius of vitamin D3 every night before bed.
Just recently my doctor told me to cut back too 2000ius/day but I asked if I could get my bloodwork taken before I cut back.
In January of 2013, after 6 months of 5000ius a day, my bloodwork came in at 36ng/ml out of a range of 30-100.
Haven't spoken to my doctor yet but I'm not cutting back anytime soon. I think I am going to start taking 5000ius in the morn and 5000ius at night.Last edited by The Deadlifting Dog; 02-02-2013 at 04:45 PM.

Wow...not much of an increase. About a year ago, I talked my dr. into doing vit d test. I came back about 50. Been taking two 4000iu/day. Guess I don't have to worry about going over the range anytime soon.

I'm going to do an update soon on this to see what 5k IU did for me. But 10k IU brought me up around 90'ish, then I dropped down. At the time, I was "trying" to get some more direct sunlight but it was sporadic. In the winter, we can usually expect vit D to drop because of less sunlight exposure.
Are you taking your vitamin D with food, particularly fatty food?

Op, in bold is important. It's fat soluble and needs to be taken with meals!

Good advice above.
Care to let us know what type/brand you are taking also? I dont remember to take mine 7x a week but typically at least 4x. I use liquid and it also says to take it with a meal. Even though it's not really subliminal I typically hold it under my tongue for a couple of minutes before swallowing.
Even though the increase you had is not significant it's still puts you up into the normal range. What has the weather been like where you life the last few months? This can be a big contributing factor. Where I am we have not seen sun in a few months.

I took 5700 iu per day of Vit D in the winter months and that only brought me up to 37 from 19..
So I believe 10,000 + is the way to go before going back in for a retest.

i've been taking 10-15k per day for the past 3 years and my vitamin d was about 66 last blood draw. don't cut back...it is very hard to overdose on vitamin d. you would need at minimum 40k per day.

For everyone that posted their results, on average, how much direct sun do you get per day?
I'm going to have my vitamin D levels checked soon, but I get roughly 30 minutes of sun a day (running, biking, etc. outside) and wonder how that would alter my supplementation (if needed, at all?).

Vitamin D doesn't like me. Try a result in the low 30's after 5,000 iu 5 days a week and 50,000 iu D2 the other 2 days. I'm currently taking 10k a day and still on D2.
D3 brand is NuMedica and drisdol prescription.~ PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR SOURCE CHECKS ~

Not to Hijack this thread, but these numbers leave me to a question on supplements. I notice on my test results it was for total D2+D3+25-Hydroxy which of course I failed the test miserably at a 9.2 (range 30.1-100) lol. Doc added 5k IU D3 for me, but should I stick with the D3 or do I need to look into other sources for D2 and the hydroxy?
Thanks

I've been taking 4000 iUs of Vitamin D after 2 eggs in the morning every day for a year. My Vitamin D just came back at 41.9 (30.0-100.0 ng/mL). I'm upping to 6000 or maybe 10000 iUs a day now.

Lol. I am on the same dosage.
I tested at 25 for d3 and <4 for d2 taking only 680 iu per day
Doc prescribed 50,000 iu of d2 twice a week and I went to 52 total. That's 23 d3 and 29 d2. So the d2 was working.
Then I started 5000 iu of d3 on the days I wasn't taking the d2. I didn't get blood work but I upped the d3 to 10,000 split in two doses per day (morn and nite)
I'll test again in June
