Fish Oil -- Where to Get and How Much to Take?

I am sure many people here take Fish Oil daily. Sometimes it is hard to determine the real source. And for some makers, mercury levels and PCB levels are a concern, too.

How much total EPA+DHA do you take daily?
Where do you get your fish oil?

Right now, I take 3 grams a day divided into two doses. It is from Swanson Vitamins, and works out to 6 pills total.

Probably the best on the market. I take these because of how they are formulated; read the product description. I don't think, other then prescription EPA/DHA formulations, that there is any better OTC.

I just take 2,000 mgs/day of Fish Oil, Kirkland Brand from Costco. I know the Kirkland (Costco) Brands are made by some reputable US vitamin manufacturers so I'm comfortable with them. I also add Olive Oil to my diet on a regular basis.

And how much do you take a day? Do you split the dose?

Those pills are the biggest I have ever seen! Over an inch long! One review after another says "hard to swallow". But I am sure they are high quality as you say.

LEF themselves say to take between 2400 and 4800 mg per day depending on triglycerides levels. (See: http://www.lef.org/featured-articles...ng_Inferno.htm)

Carlson's fish oil lemon flavor is great. One teaspoon is 1600mg of omega 3 (EPA 800mg, Dha 500mg and other 300mg)

I take 800mg EPA 600 mg DHA - 2 pills of Carlsen's Elite Omega-3 gems. Pretty cheap on amazon - I'll have to check Costco's brand next time. I take them whenever, without issue. You get used to swallowing such a big load....

Remember to gauge what you're taking by the total amount of Omega-3 in the supplement. Not the total amount of fish oil in it.

I would go a step further and say amount of EPA and DHA. These are the ones all the definitive research is done on, not "other" omega-3's of which there are plenty.

As for definitive research, just read the other night (found out a friend of mine is bipolar type 2) some very convincing data on a benefit I had no idea about. EPA helps reduce depressive and manic episode recurrence, both combined with various other medications and alone. Don't get fooled, there are a lot of unsubstantiated claimed benefits of omega-3s, but at the same time the positive effects on triglycerides, weight loss, and some other things are very well supported by the data. It's a fascinating area of study. Theoretically, before all of our beef and poultry were corn-fed by food incorporated, their grass diet enabled more omega-3 storage in their fat, and we humans used to get more of it naturally...

Obviously quality is key here and I am not familiar with LEF's fish oils other than just reading the numbers for EPA/DHA. However, you must keep in mind the serving size. LEF's product is for 2 pills, which puts it below a number of other high quality Omega 3-6-9 products.

For heart health 4grams of fish oil seems to have a lot of solid research to support it.

At one point I took more, but since then I've toned it down and try to get more healthy fats via diet.

These are great very small and easy to swallow but, pack a big punch... a pharmacist recommended them to me. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...MPHLWx015#desc
