    Retest?

    Hey guys,

Did a lab test with private med and had a result of 170 testosterone serum which I believe is that of a 60 years old male (I'm 40). However, I did the test at 2pm and have read that the test should be done between 8-10am as afternoon tests will give you false reading because testosterone decline after mid morning. Should I retest in the morning time to determine if I need to go to a TRT clinic?

It's always a good idea to have multiple tests done before making any decisions about treatment. An ~8am blood draw is usually the preferred way to test T levels.

I have no doubt that your values will be higher in the morning, but I seriously doubt that the morning value will be a "good" number. Testosterone levels are supposed to drop as the day goes on, but 160 for a total T value is very low. Lower than most guys would be around 2pm.

It's als very important to try and figure out why your levels are low before you consider treatment. Don't just have your total T measured on your next round of bloodwork. See the "finding a TRT doc" sticky for a list of blood tests that you should have done on your next set of labs.

Lots of guy here - like myself - didn't know much about TRT before they began. Don't make that mistake. As Chauffeur alluded to, it's an absolute MUST to find out what is causing your condition before you embark on treatment. Do your own homework while you find a knowledgeable health care provider. Lots of books out there. Start with the "sticky" posts at the top of this forum for an excellent primer on hypogonadism.

Yes your test will be higher in the morning but I can guarantee they wont come up past 300. In my experience it made maybe a 20% change. I don't know your reference range but 160 is super low regardless. Even if it did come back higher do you still want to have hypogonadal ranges of T all but 1 hour of the day? What use is that!
